Bernard Maybeck

San Mateo County, CA

Bernard Maybeck had a number of projects in San Mateo County on the west side of the Bay Area. Three of these projects were done following San Francisco's 1906 earthquake with his partners George Howard and Maybeck's brother-in-law, John White, under the firm of Maybeck, Howard and White Architects. A firm of Howard & White was later founded in 1909. During these various partnerships, they completed numerous reconstruction projects after the 1906 earthquake. John White is credited as the lead designer of the firm. White had moved to California sometime during the early 1890s and earned his certificate in 1902. Little is known about George Howard. A partnership known as Maybeck and White also produced several projects. Their practice took place at 35 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Maybeck and White both spent their entire careers out of this office.
