59th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment

The following synopsis is taken directly from Units of the Confederate States Army by Joseph H. Crute, Jr. Published by Derwent Books; Midlothian, Virginia. (c)1987.

"59th Infantry Regiment was formed in the spring of 1862 with men from Jackson, Whitfield, Crawford, Worth and Turner counties. After service some time in Georgia and North Carolina, the unit moved to Virginia. Early in 1863 it was attached to General G.T. Anderson's Brigade where it remained for the balance of the war. The 59th fought at Gettysburg, moved with Longstreet to assist Bragg at Chickamauga, then served in the Knoxville Campaign. Returning to Virginia, it took part in the conflicts at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, the Petersburg siege north of the James River, and the Appomattox operations. The unit lost more than twenty-five percent of the 525 engaged at Gettysburg and sustained 69 casualties from May 6 to April 14 and 85 from August 1 to December 31, 1864. Fifteen officers and 251 men were present at the surrender. Its field officers were Colonel Jack Brown; Lieutenant Colonels Bolivar H. Gee, Charles J. Harris, and George R. Hunter; and Majors Mastin G. Bass and William H. Fickling."

Records show a Colonel Brown of the 59^th Regiment Georgia Volunteers and Major Rylander's 10^th Georgia Battalion guarding prisoners at Macon. In correspondence dated 25 August 1862 the 10^th Georgia Battalion and the 59^th Georgia regiment are listed as guarding stores and prisoners in Macon and also in a report "Position of Troops in the Department of South Carolina and Georgia", dated 25 September 1862, as commanded by General G.T. Beauregard.

In Folsom's book, Heroes and Martyrs of Georgia he states:

[The 59th Regiment was similarly reassigned in or before Nov 1862. James Jasper Theus and Alfred Russell Theus were admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 4 in Richmond VA 23-Nov-1862 per Bethel Primitive Baptist Church - The First 100 Years {pp. 353-354} by John R. & Janice B. Adams. Per Mr. Crute above, the unit was attached to General G.T.Anderson's Brigade in "early 1863" for the remainder of the war. The 59th GA Regiment was present at Fort Powhatan on the James River around April 1863 when it was relieved by the 10th Battalion GA Volunteers. --Steve Scroggins]
