Phraseology

Academy Tower/Ground Phraseology

"Academy Ground, Talon ___, North Ramp, request Taxi, with information ___, ______ departure" (Call on North Ramp, before entering Bravo taxiway; if parked on Row one, call before moving)
"Academy Tower, Talon ___, ready for TAKEOFF" (Call when ready for takeoff and holding short of assigned runway; if you request a downwind departure and Tower approves it, permission to turn crosswind is implied. On the other hand, you might request a downwind before takeoff and NOT get the approval, in which case you must request it again and receive approval before turning crosswind. Straight-out departures normally require no further permissions from Tower after takeoff; you may switch frequencies automatically when clear of the Class D airspace, when tower hands you off to another ATC facility (e.g., under IFR), or when the USAFA departure procedure in use requires a frequency change (normally the case for all IFT flights).
Tower, Talon ___, request CLOSED" (A required call before turning crosswind when you would like to remain in th etraffic pattern. While flying closed traffic, you must recieve verbal permission from the Tower before each turn to crosswind. Sometimes the Tower will anticipate your call and say "Left/Right turn approved" or "Left/Right cosed traffic approved" before you ask for it when you are flying mulitple patterns for touch-and-go practice. If Tower has not approved the turn by the time you reach 300' below TPA, request closed. In order to keep radio talk to a minimum, Tower has requested that you do not repeat the approval to fly closed traffic-just turn when approved).
"Tower, Talon ___, turning BASE," (full-stop/touch-and-go/low approach) (Base leg call is mandatory at KAFF. You must also let the Tower know whether you will be full-stop, touch-and-go, or low approach. If you forget to mention this, Tower will inquire, "Say type landing." the default clearance at any towered airport will be, "Cleared to land", which means you are cleared for a full-stop landing. If you want a touch-and-go, you must explicitly request it.)
Tower, Talon ___, BREAKING OUT for ENTRY ___" (16L/34R) (Required call when breaking out of the patern for re-entry; this will be followed by the appropriate call to begin the entry leg at the ENTRY point)
"Tower, Talon ___, ENTRY, ___" (16L/34R) (Call when directly above the entry point at 8000' MSL. Approach the entry point so that you can roll out over the point on the entry leg heading, which is 45 degrees to the downwind leg)
"Academy Tower, Talon ___, FOREST, with information ___" (Report FOREST, PALMER, or FIVE MILES SOUTH. Note that the word "Academy" is used only in the initail radio call. Also note that the arrival name need not be included.)
