Notes for John Avory "Cuff" Grimes:

Enlisted at Bryant Station, Ky. Sept. 1862 in the 8th Kentucky Cav., Co. D commanded by Colonel Roy Cluke. He served as a private. The battles he was in were Hartsville, Tenn.; Lebanon, Ky.; Mt. Sterling, Ky.; and North Ohio raid Buffington Island, Ohio. He was taken prisoner at Buffington Island and sent to prison at Chicago. Paroled in 1864. Belonged to U.C.V. Camp Edwards, received UDC Cross of Honor. Before the Civil War he was in the Kentucky State Guards. Died in Confederate Soldiers home in Higginsville, Missouri.
