About geocities.com
When Yahoo! bought Geocites for $3.6 billion in 1999 it was the third most visited website in the world. Originally founded as Beverly Hills Internet (BHI), in 1994 by David Bohnett and John Rezner, Geocities let site users selected a "city" in which to place their web pages. Yahoo did away with this shortly after they acquired Geocities.
As late as October of 2009, there were 7,450,000, (that's over seven million,) GeoCities URLs still indexed in Google. In September of that year, GeoCities pages had over 10 million unique users, according to analysts comScore Inc. While this is a 16 percent drop from the 12 million they'd seen just a year earlier, it still put Geocities at the 200th most visited url in the world. On October 26, 2009, Yahoo! shut down GeoCities.
