Descendants of Wiley
Sizemore
Wiley
SIZEMORE was born in South Carolina in 1820 according to his War
service record. Parentage unknown but he was living near Muscogee County GA
when he was married to Mary ASKEW 21-June-1846 in Marion County by David G. Ray,
J.P. Marriage license issued in Muscogee County. Mary was born in 1836 in Griffin,
Spalding County GA, (per The Generations of John W. and Jane Griffin,
by Georgia Beatrice Griffin, Ed.D, Ochlocknee, 1983), however, her age on the
1860 Census was 37, as was Wiley's, and in 1880 is 54, when Wiley's is age
60.
Mary ASKEW
is believed to be the daughter of James I. ASKEW and Cintha (Sintha?) SIZEMORE
GOLSON. It's not 100% clear whether Sizmore is Cintha's maiden name since
some accounts name her as a Golson. Given the presence of Martha Sizemore,
age 11, in the Askew house in 1860 (see below), it's possible that Martha
Sizemore is the daughter of Cintha(Syntha?) Golson and an unknown
Sizemore.
The 1860 Taylor County
GA Census shows James I. Aschew, 75, a physician whose birthstate seems to be
Pennsylvania. Besides his wife and two apparent sons, , there appears in
the household a Martha Sizemore, age 11, listed as an orphan. [ From A History of Marion County, Georgia -- Motherland of
Many by Rena S. Cobb, Wolfe Publishing, 1997, pp.415-419.] It's believed that Andrew Jackson SIZEMORE, and George Washington
SIZEMORE described more on pp. 419-422 of Cobb's book are probably related to
Wiley. Andrew Jackson SIZEMORE (b. 1823, S.C.) may be Wiley's brother,
while George Washington SIZEMORE (b. 1792, S.C., married to Rhoda about 1820)
may be an uncle.
Wiley Sizemore enlisted as a private in
Company K, 59th
Georgia Infantry June 20, 1862 in Bibb County, GA. He was age 42 at
his enlistment. The 59th Georgia Infantry Regiment had been assigned guard
duty at Camp Oglethorpe in Macon, GA, where they would remain until sometime
before November 1862 when they were sent to northern Virginia. [
Microfilm number M226 roll 55, listed as W.Sizemore ] Military service
further documented in Pension records, Marion County GA, and widow's pension for wife, Mary Askew
Sizemore. In an affidavit dated 24-Jun-1908, three witnesses attest that Mary
Sizemore is the widow of Wiley Sizemore who died on
18-Feb-1908. Her widow's affidavit dated 10-May-1908 and application
dated 13-Mar-1908 confirms the same date of death for Wiley. Wiley Sizemore
applied for the Indigent Soldier's Pension each year from 1897 through
1907.
Property Records show that Wiley Sizemore bought and
sold land in Marion County GA beginning in 1851 and continuing through
1880.
The dates
and places of death for Mary (Askew) Sizemore are unknown. They are
said to be buried in unmarked graves in the Juniper Cemetery, Talbot
