THE EARLY WINSLOWS IN AMERICA

Edward and Magdalen Winslow of Droitwich, England, became the parents of eight children, five sons and three daughters: Edward born 19 October 1722 John, April of 1595; Elynor, April of 1598; Kenelin 29 April 1599; Gilbert, October of 1600; Elizabeth, March of 1601; Magdalen 26 December 1604 and Josiah, February of 1605. (1.)

The Winslow surname is taken from the town of Winslow in Buckinghamshire, England. The original family seat was in Worchestershire. (2.)

All five of the Winslow brothers came early to America. Edward, an ancestor of Winslow Farr, and Gilbert came on the Mayflower in 1620: John came on the Fortune in 1621. Both Kenelin and Josiah came before 1655.

A brief unconfirmed family history of Lorin Farr describes Edward as a well to do Englishman, who traveled abroad after finishing his education. In Holland, he met and fell in love with a young Pilgrim girl. They were married, and he aided the little band of Pilgrims who were leaving for the New World. He gave money to help purchase the Mayflower, and he and his bride sailed on it to America. She died on the ship after arriving at Plymouth, as did many others. He later married a widow who had also been a passenger on the Mayflower.

John was married at New Plymouth to Mary Chilton, daughter of James Chilton, another passenger on the Mayflower, at some time prior to 1627. According to family tradition, Mary was the first female to set foot on the American shores. This may refer either to the landing at Cape Cod where the women went ashore to wash their clothes, or to the landing at Plymouth. John resided in the north part of Plymouth called Plain Dealing until about 1656. He was a merchant and held various municipal offices at Plymouth . (2. )

Appendix II The HEGIRA OF EDWARD7 Winslow

The will of Thomas Harton, dated 14 Sept. 1620 and proved 19 Dec. following (see note h above) indudes under the heading "Desperate Debts," the following:
"Edward Windslowe some time under sheriff of co. Worcester, owes money for which I can get no payment as he has fled to Ireland. Sir Henry Foilett has my bonds for same. John Wilson also fled to Ireland. Win. Woodward alias Blauckett fled to Pembrokeshire. Mr. John Richardson of Castle Morton, dwelling in London."
Possibly the indebtedness of Winslow derived from his having helped Simon Clarke and Charles Stamford, for Chancery Proceedings of 24 Oct. 1611 show this answer to a bill of complaint of Richard Moore, gent.:
"Answer (only) of Edward Winslow: Subject Winslow was surety on a bond.
Simon Clarke and Charles Stamford were principals" (Banks MSS, Rare Book
Room, Library of Congress, red bound series, fo. 749).

It so happens that Sir John Bucke of Kempsey, who brought Keres. well from Kenelm0 Winslow, was in the commission of the peace for Worcestershire. Bucke s wife, Eleanor, was sister to the aforesaid Henry Folliott, kt., the latter having by 1615 gone to Ireland, where in 1619 he was created Lord Folliott of Ballyshannon, Sligo, in the peerage of Ireland. It is suggested that Harton knew that Edward Winslow bad either a kinship or acquaintance with the Buckes, and consequently approached Sir John Bucke for help in collecting the money that Winslow owed; if so, Bucke probably advised Harton to turn his evidence of the debt over to Sir Henry Folliott, Bucke s brother-in-law, who was then in Ireland.

In that era, the high-sheriff of a county normally would select a kinsman or acquaintance to become under-sheriff. In 1620 the high-sheriff of Worcestershire was Sir Edmond Wylde of Kempsey9 whose paternal granddame was Eleanor Wall of Droitwich, sister to the mother of the Sir John Bucke who bought Kereswell from Kenelm Winslow. Bucke s father, Francis, in his will, showed his affection for his wife s cousins Thomas Wylde of Kempsey (father of Sir Edmond), and Thomas brother, George Wylde of Droitwich (see will of Francis Bucke of Kempsey, Worcs., gent., dated 1580, proved 1581 at Worcester; will of Sir Edmond Wylde, proved in 1620 [P.C.C. Soame, 1094]; will of his father, Thomas Wylde of K.empsey, Worcs., proved 1599 (P.C.G. 69 Kidd]; "Visitation of Worcestershire, 1569," Harleian Society Publication, vol. 27, p. 26, 27, 151 in the latter page Kemsey in Bedfordshire is wrongly stated for Kempsey, Worcs., which the wills correctly indicate as home of the Wyldes. Also see "Visitation of Worcestershire, 1634," Harleian Society Publication, vol. 90, p. 79. Plainly Wylde seems to have been led by Sir John Bucke, his close kinsman, to choose Edward7 Winslow as under-sheriff. The inference again is that Winslow was either cousin or close friend to Bucke.

The inhumane treatment meted out to debtors in English prisons of those days was frightful enough to persuade those who could not pay to flee the country. But by 1621 we are told that Edward7 Winslow was in England, living at Clifton, a tiny hamlet in Severnstoke. See note a above.

NOTE: Numerous sources have incorrectly given Edward Winslow's birth and baptism date (including Mayflower Families for Five Generations [Volume 5], Eugene Stratton's Plymouth Colony: Its History and Its People, and James Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England). I have checked the original parish register for the year 1595, and the entry reads exactly as follows:

October .20. Edward Wynsloe sonne of Edward Wynsloe was Baptized & Born the xviii th of October being Saterday

Govenor of Massachusetts and a Mayflower passenger. Edward Winslow was the son of Edward Winslow, a wealthy owner of a salt boilery, and Magdalene Oliver. Edward Winslow was baptized at Droitwich, Worcester, England on 28 October 1595.

Winslow soon joined with the Separatists, and moved to Leyden where he became a printer along with William Brewster, publishing illegal religious pamphlets. His first wife, Elizabeth Barker, was from Chattisham, Suffolk, England.

His second wife was the widow of William White of the Mayflower.

Winslow also made trips to England in the early years of the Colony to conduct business agreements and make legal arrangements, including trips in 1623-4, 1630, and 1635. In 1646 he returned to live in England and served in the English army under Oliver Cromwell . In 1655 he died of a fever on a military expedition to capture the island of Hispaniola. Upon his death, one of the ship's chroniclers wrote this poem:

The Eighth of May, west from 'Spaniola shore,
God took from us our Grand Commissioner,
Winslow by Name, a man in Chiefest Trust,
Whose Life was sweet, and Conversation just;
Whose Parts and wisdome most men did excell:
An honour to his Place, as all can tell.

Edward Winslow authored several books. He wrote Good News From New England first published in 1624. He authored a good portion of Mourt's Relation: A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth first published in 1622. Winslow also wrote Hypocricie Unmasked (1646), and New England's Salamander (1647), which are both for the most part religious discourses. He also edited several pamphlets.

Edward Winslow had four other siblings which came to America, namely Gilbert Winslow (Mayflower, 1620), John Winslow (Fortune, 1621), Josias Winslow (White Angel, 1631), and Kenelm Winslow, who married Eleanor (Newton) Adams, who came in the Anne, 1623. Edward Winslow also had several sisters, including Magdalen who married Rev. William Wake on 25 April 1627, in Wareham, Dorset, England.

GOVERNOR EDWARD WINSLOW'S WILL.

THE will of Governor Edward Winslow, which is preserved at Somerset House, London, is one of the three existing original wills of Mayflower passengers. The others are Mary (Chilton) Winslow's and Peregrine White's, both of which we have already reproduced. The illustration of Governor winslow's will facing this page is from a photograph made at the expense of the Foreign Research Fund and secured by the Hon. Winslow Warren, of our Committee on Publication, with the courteous assistance of the Rev. Stopford W. Brooke, of London.

No mention of Governor Winslow's death is found on the Plymouth Colony records, and we learn the date from Nathaniel Morton's New England's Memorial, under the year 1655. We reprint his account in lid], from the Rev. Thomas Prince's copy of the first edition (1669), now in the Boston Public Library.

This year that Worthy and Honourable Gentleman Mr. Edward Winslow deceased; of whom I have had occasion to make honourable mention formerly in this Discourse. He was the Son of Edward Winslow Esq; of the Town of Draughtwich* in the County of Worcester: He travelling into the Low-Countreys, in his Journeys fell into acquaintance with the Church of Leyden in Holland, unto whom he joyned, and with whom he continued until they parted to come into New-England, he coming with that part that came first over, and became a very worthy and useful Instrument amongst them, both in the place of Government and otherwise, until his last Voyage for England, being sent on special Imployment for the Government of the Massachusets, as is forementioned in this Book; and afterwards was imployed as one of the grand Commissioners in that unhappy Design against 1)omingo in Hispaniola, who taking grief for the ill success of that Enterprize; on which, together with some other Infirmities that were upon him, he fell sick at Sea betwixt Domingo and Jamaica, and died the eighth day of May, which was about the Sixty first year of his life, and his Body was honourably committed to the Sea, with the usual Solemnity of the Discharge of Fourty two Piece of Ordnance.

One of the Company who was imployed in taking notice of the Particulars of that Tragedy, gave such Testimony of the said Mr. Winslow, as followeth in this Poem:

While examining the Marshfield town records some time since, the Editor discovered a vote
regarding the disposition of the ten pounds bequeathed by Governor Winslow to the poor of that town. A literal transcript of this record follows the copy of the will.

I Edward Winslowe of London. Esquior. being now bound in a voyage to sea in the service of the comon welth do make publish & declare this to be my last will & testamt touching the disposing of my estate. ffirst I doe give will devise & bequeath all my lands & stock. in New England & all my possibilities & porcons in future allotm'S & divicons to Josia my. onely sonne & his heires, hee allowing to my wife, a fill third parte thereof for her life Also. Governor Josiah2 Winslow, son of Governor Edward1 Winslow, the Mayflower Passenger, by his second wife, Susanna (Fuller) White, widow of William1 White. Josiah2 Winslow was the first native born Governor of Plymouth Colony, and the only child of a Mayflower Passenger to hold that office. He was a half-brother of Resolved White who witnessed this document.

ELLEN, b. say 1636; m. Marshfield 20 [December 1656 Samuel Baker] (the marriage record as published is missing all but the name of the bride and the day of the event; the month and the year are suggested by the preceding marriage record, which was for November 1656, and the date of birth of the first child, on 23 March 1657/8 [MarVR 2, 4]). On 7 March 1653/4 "Kanelme Winslow complained against John Soule for speaking falsely of and scandalizing his daughter in carrying diverse false reports betwixt Josias Standish and her; the which complaint, at the request of G[e]orge Soule, father of the said John Soule, was referred until another Court, to be tried by a jury of twelve of his equals" [PCR 3:46-47]. ESTATE: In the 1623 Plymouth division of lands "Gilbard Winslow" received one acre as a passenger on the Mayflower [PCR 12:4]. His name does not appear in the 1627 Plymouth division of cattle.

The inventory of the estate of his brother KENELM WINSLOW included "one half of the portion of land granted by the Court to him [Kenelm Winslow] and his brother Josias Winslow upon the account of their brother Gilbert Winslow as he was a first comer" [MD 24:42, citing PCPR 3:1:56].

On 1 June 1663 Plymouth Court acknowledged "Gilbert Winslow, deceased, who was one of the first comers, to have a right of land, and do allow his heirs to look out and propose to the Court some parcel of land that the Court may think meet to accommodate them in" [PCR 4:40].

DEATH: In England by 1650 [Bradford 447].

COMMENTS: In his list of those on the Mayflower Bradford included Gilbert Winslow, and reported of him in 1651 that "after diver years here, [he] returned into England and died there" [Bradford 443, 447].

Writing in 1994 about Mayflower passengers who returned to England, Doris Jones-Baker was unable to find anything about Gilbert Winslow in English records [Genealogists' Magazine 24:490-91]. Parents: Edward WINSLOW and Magdaline OLIVER.

John Winslow, son of Edward and Magdalen, and brother of Governor Edward Winslow, was born at Droitwich, England, on Saturday, 16/26 April, 1597, and baptized the following Monday. He died at Boston in New England, in the ten weeks between 12/22 March, 1673/4 and 21/31 May, 1674, the dates of making and probating his wilt, which is preserved in the files of the Suffolk County Registry of Probate, at Boston.

The transcript of the will was made from the original document, which is twenty-two and seven eighths inches high and seventeen and one eighth inches wide. It is in better condition, as the reproduction shows, than that of Mary (Chilton) Winslow, which we reproduced in our first volume. It is interesting to note that both wills were written, and witnessed, by John Hayward.

The original inventory is not in the files, and the copy was made from Volume V, pages 211 and 212, of the Probate Records.

Josiah Winslow of the Towne of Marshfeild senir" made his will "this l2th of the second month 1673 it, that is, on 12 April, 1673, old style. Bequests were as follows:

"1 Doe make Margarett my Deare and loveing wife, my sole Executrix of my Goods, and Chattles for her Comfortable use and livelyhood Dureing her Naturall life; as alsoe the one halfe of my Dwelling house that is to say the westerly end, as it is now Devided with the seller and one halfe of the orchyard and out housing; and alsoe the one halfe of the land therunto belonging, both meadow and upland with all other privilidges and appurtenances, in the Towne of Marshfeild aforsaid; and the one halfe of all the Lands belonging to mee, by any Graunt Graunted to mee formerly; or to be Graunted, that I have not sold; and Disposed off: Alsoe for the other prte of my lands house and housing 1 Doe Give unto my Naturall son Jonathan Winslow .... with that halfe Given to my wife after her Decease: I Give to my son Jonathan as my heire .... but incase the said Jonathan shall Die without heires .... Hi Tim, My daughter, Claudia Keyworth and son, Randall Smith and I have researched the pedigree of the Winslow family for some time. Among other documents we have in our possession photocopies of a number of Winslow family wills. We obtained a partial translation of the wills from Mrs Sue cammpbell an approved researcher for the Worcestor County Record office in Worcestor, England. We obtained a complete translation for Kenelm Winslow's will as well as other Winslow documents as translated and prepared by Vona Williams on April 14, 2003 at the Salt Lake City Genealogical Society.

The Farr pedigree chart lists Elizabeth Foliott as Kenelms Wife; however, Kenelms will states in part quote” I will and appoint the custody thereof ( my funeral discharged and my debts paid ) to Katherine my very loving wife whom I constitute and appoint to be my sole exectrix of my present will''

Other sources includingThe book” Mayflower Hertiage” written wnd compiled by, Kenelm Winslow published by George Harrop & Co LTD in 1957 and the local Mr Bob Cross local historian for Kempsey and Srevern Stoke England names Katherine ( possibly maiden name of Katherine Buck) as Kenelm's wife.

We plan to have copies of the original as well as the translation of Kenelm and Richard Winslow wills. According to D Kenelm Winslow, Richard Winslow who lived and died during the reign og King Henry the eighth was Kenelm's grandfather The very interesting inventory of Kenelm's estate was written on sheepskin parhment Our report will also include some medieval manorial estate court records (documenting Kenelm (Wynseiow)as as a “freeholder” of land as well as Keneim's service as a juryman for the medieval court of Lord Thomas Coventry's Croome Hill Estate. We plan to prepare a written report about our research and compilation of these Wnslow records to be available at the Winslow Farr Sr. family reunion in August.

On 8 January 1632/3 "Francis Eaton acknowledgeth that he hath sold to Kanelm & Josias Wynslow the now dwelling house of the said Francis" [PCR 1:8]. Granted mowing ground, 14 March 1635/6, 20 March 1636/7 [PCR 1:40, 55]. Granted "threescore acres of land lying upon the south side of the Eele River, above the great swamp.... This grant was made void upon a grant made to him at Green's Harbor," 6 January 1636/7 [PCR 1:47]. On 5 February 1637/8 "Kenelme Winslow requesteth a grant of lands at Green's Harbor" [PCR 1:76], and on 5 March 1637/8 he received, in partnership with Love Brewster, "all that parcel of land remaining of that neck of land lying on the east side of the lands lately granted to Josias Winslow, at Greene's Harbor" [PCR 1:78, 111].

On 26 October 1647 "Mr. Hatherley here in Court acknowledgeth that Helene, the wife of Kanelme Winslow, acknowledgeth her free assent and consent to the sale of all such lands as her husband had sold unto Samuell Sturdevant. Captain Miles Standish" deposed the same regarding her consent to sales to Henry Sampson [PCR 2:118-19].

Granted one hundred acres at Teticutt, 4 March 1673/4 (pursuant to an order of June 1662) [PCR 5:141].

In his will, dated 8 August 1672 and proved 5 June 1673, "Kanelme Winslow Senior" ordered that "what estate I have formerly settled on my eldest son Kanelme ... shall remain unaltered" and bequeathed to "my son Nathaniel ... the half of my farm that I last lived upon ... as I gave him by a former deed of gift"; "and the other half of the farm to my wife, for the term of her natural life" and "after the decease of my wife Ellinor Winslow the said half of the farm shall return unto my son Nathaniel"; to "my son Job ... half of my land at Namassakett which is about fifty acres ... and the other fifty acres or thereabouts unto Kanelme Baker my grandchild"; to "my daughter Ellinor" £5; "my wife shall at her decease give unto Mary Addams an equal portion of the goods and moveables as to the rest of my grandchildren"; wife to be sole executrix and "Major Josias Winslow and my son Kanelme Winslow" to be overseers [MD 24:41-42, citing PCPR 3:1:56].

The inventory of the estate of Kenelm Winslow, taken 25 September 1672, totalled £87 15s. 4d.; the real estate, unvalued, followed: "one half of the dwelling house and housings and meadow lands and uplands belonging to the said farm he had lived on and now died possessed of in the town of Marshfield"; "one half of all the lands granted him by the Court with the ancient freemen which lieth on the west side of Taunton River either divided or to be divided hereafter"; and "one half of the portion of land granted by the court to him and his brother Josias Winslow upon the account of their brother Gilbert Winslow as he was a first comer" [MD 24:42, citing PCPR 3:1:57].

MARRIAGE: Plymouth in June 1634 "Elen Adames" [PCR 1:30]; she was ELLEN NEWTON, widow of JOHN ADAMS [TAG 55:212-13]; she was buried at Marshfield 5 December 1681, aged 83 [MD 2:250; MarVR 13].

COMMENTS: Although Kenelm Winslow first appears of record in Plymouth in the tax list of 25 March 1633, and was therefore certainly in New England by 1632, he is paired in the early years with his brother Josiah Winslow, who is known to have arrived in 1631, and so we assume that Kenelm came at the same time.

On 4 June 1645 "Kenelme Winslow complained that he had injustice, in that he could not be heard in the suit betwixt John Mynard and himself"; after investigation by the court, he "was committed to prison and fined £10," whereupon he reversed himself and was released from prison and the fine was eventually remitted [PCR 2:85].

On 5 May 1645/6 "upon hearing of the cause betwixt Roger Chaundler and Kenelme Winslow, for his daughter's clothes, which the said Kenelme detaineth, upon pretense of some further service which he required of her, whereunto the said Roger utterly refused to consent, it is ordered by the Court, that the said Kenelme Winslow shall deliver the maid her clothes without any further delay" [PCR 2:98].

On the same day "Kenelme Winslow, for opprobrious words against the church of Marshfeild, saying they were all liars, &c., was ordered by the Court to find sureties for his good behavior, which he refusing to do, was committed to prison, where he remained until the General Court following" [PCR 2:98].

Despite this bad year, Kenelm Winslow continued to hold important town and colony offices for another decade. His last year as deputy was 1653, and he virtually disappears from public view at that time, although he lived for another two decades. This was about the time that his two elder and more prominent brothers, Edward and John, left Plymouth Colony; perhaps Kenelm owed his limited success to the presence of these brothers, and once they were gone his own abilities were not sufficient to maintain himself at this level. No children by the second marriage are mentioned in the will, made 9 March, 1737, and probated 25 February, 1745.

The family of Winslows existed in England long previous to the first record here listed. It is believed this English Family was entirely distinct from the Winslows of Denmark, the lst ancestor of the latter which has been found, being recorded Peder Jacobsen Winslow, father of Prof. Jacob Benigus Winslow, who was born 2 April 1669, which was later than the pilgrim Wlnslows. However, there was a parish in Scania named Winslof or Winslow, at an early date, which may have originated with a more ancient family, from whom it is possible that the English and American Winslows are descended.

About the 1st records we have of the English Winslows are in connection with the family of Crouchmans, whose residence was called Crouchman's Hall; but when it came into possession of the Ninslows by marriage, it was styled Wyncelow's Hall and the ancient arms of that family are sculptured in stone In various points of the old hall and also the Manor.

Jno. Wyncelowe who married the heiress Mary or Mariota Crouchman, was of great repute in the City of London about 1350, but it is not determined from what point of England his family came, though the name is frequently mentioned in the early history of London.
