COMMENTS: On 13 July 1635, "Anto Bessy," aged 26, was enrolled at London for passage to New England on the James [Hotten 107].
Although there is no record of the presence of Anthony Bessey in Lynn, we assume he resided there briefly, since several of his fellow passengers on the James made that their first residence.
On 5 March 1638/9, "Anthonie Bessie [was] presented for living alone disorderly, and afterwards for taking in an inmate without order" [PCR 1:118]. (Anthony Bessey was probably married about the time of this presentment.)
On 10 January or February 1661/2, Anna Bessey, Dorcas Bessey and Mary Bessey posted bond, promising "to appear at the Court to be holden at Plymouth the first Tuesday in March next, to answer for her unnatural and cruel carriages towards George Barlow, [their] father-in-law" [PCR 4:7]. On 4 March 1661/2, "Anna Bessey, for her cruel and unnatural practices towards her father-in-law, George Barlow, in chopping of him in the back, notwithstanding the odiousness of her fact, the Court, considering of some circumstances, viz:, her ingenious confession, together with her present condition, being with child, and some other particulars, have sentenced her to pay a fine of ten pounds, or to be publicly whipped at some other convenient time when her condition will admit thereof"; "Dorcas Bessey and Mary Bessey, for carriages of like nature towards their father-in-law, though not in so high a degreee, were both sentenced to sit in the stocks during the pleasure of the Court, which accordingly was performed"; "the younger, viz:, Mary Bessey, was sharply reproved by the Court, as being by her disobedience the occasioner of the evil abovementioned"; "G[e]org[e] Barlow and his wife were both severly reproved for their most ungodly living in contention with the other, and admonished to live otherwise" [PCR 4:10].
BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1950 Mrs. John E. Barclay published an account of the family of Anthony Bessey; we have followed her judgment on the birth order of the children of the immigrant [TAG 26:193-95].
In 1965 Mrs. Florence Besse Ballantine compiled and edited Descendants of Anthony Besse, 1609-1656.

Alice BEVYS221 was born on 7 Jun 1572 in St Mary Arches, Exeter, Devonshire, England. She died on 7 Jan 1630/31 in Exeter, Devonshire, England. She was buried on 13 Jan 1630/31 in Exeter, Devonshire, England.222

Alice Marshall of Exeter made her will 30 December, 1630, and it was proved [P.C.C., 23 St. John] on 24 February, 1630/1. it disposed of a large property, most of it going to her son James Marshall, including premises in Exeter and "messuages and tenements within the manor of Daccombe," St.. Mary Church, Devon. "Item I give to my daughter Elizabeth Trowbridge £50 awl one piece of plate to the value of £10." Among grandchildren receiving £5 each were named John and Elizabeth Trowbridge. Other relatives named were brothers Richard and Peter Beavis; sister-in-law Susanna Beavis; four sons of Peter Beavis; Alice Beavis, daughter of brother Nicholas deceased; "mother-in-law Mistress Jane Martyn"; and, in particular, her children, Richard Marshall, Jane Guide, Alice Harris, and Susan Marshall. Susan, for example, was to receive, when of age, enough to make tip £800, including what came to her from her father, cousin John, and brother John. This will shows that the following entries [RM.A.] refer to Elizabeth Trowbridge's family, though her own name does not appear among them:

Married, 30 August, 1595, John Marshall and Alice Bevys.
Baptized, children of John Marshall,
29 June, 1598, Jane (buried 30 May, 1600).
17 June, 1599, John (buried 20 March, 1600/1).
26 June, 1600, Alice ("daughter of the Worshipful Mr. John Marshall," married 19 June, 1621, to George Harris).
18 March. 1603/4, Jane (married 26 September, 16 24, to James
Gould)~
26 March, 1607, Anne (buried 14 November, 1609).
20 January, 1608/9, James.
10 July, 1610, 1iohn (buried 16 December 1630).
29 September, 1611, Susan.
3 November, 1613, Richard.
Buried, 17 August, 1624, John Marshall.
13 January, 1630/1, Alice Marshall, widow.

The spelling of the name Bevys was changed to Beavis by Peter Bevys, between 1624 and 1630. In 1624 he signed Bevis as witness to Marshall s will in 1630 Beavis as witness to Mrs. Marshall's. After 1630, all appear to have spelled it Beavis; before 1624, Bevys. Peter's baptismal record and marriage license were for Bevys, as were all other observed records in which the name appears before 1624.

That the mother of Elizabeth Marshall, Alice Bevys, was daughter of Richard Bevys. who died while Mayor of Exeter, in 1602 [Izacke], is shown not only by the Marshall pedigree, but also by the names of her brothers given in her will, Peter Bevys and Richard Bevys, who were respectively baptized [R. M. A.] as sons of Richard Bevys, on 16 August, 1590, and 9 March, 1578/9. Peter was much the more active and prominent, and became [Lyson] lord of the manor of Bishop s Chat, near Exeter. "This family," says Lyson. under the title Beavis of Clist, p. clxxiii, "is traced in Devonshire to the reign of Henry IV." He gives the arms as azure, 3 close helmets argent. garnished or; crest, a pheon argent.

John MARSHALL and Alice BEVYS were married on 30 Aug 1595 in St Mary Arches, Exeter, Devonshire, England.221 Children were: Jane MARSHALL, John MARSHALL, Alice MARSHALL, Grace MARSHALL, Jane MARSHALL, Elizabeth MARSHALL, Anne MARSHALL, James MARSHALL, John MARSHALL, Susanna MARSHALL, Richard MARSHALL, Richard MARSHALL.

Richard BEVYS was christened on 9 Mar 1578/79 in Exeter, Devonshire, England.223 Parents: Richard BEVYS and Elizabeth PROWSE.

Richard BEVYS was born about 1545. He died in 1602 in Exeter, Devonshire, England.223

Richard Bevys became Sheriff in 1591, Governor of the Guild of Merchant Adventurers in 1591, and Mayor in 1602, dying on 26 August [Izacke]. He made a deed of trust, 16 June, 1602, to William Tickle and John Marshall ,gent, for a benefaction to provide marriage portions during future years to worthy young women of several parishes [Brice]. "He bears azure, three helmets argen't, attired or" [Brice]. The same coat was painted in his memory on one of the windows of Exeter Cathedral, among similar memorials of high officials of the city; but all were hidden for two centuries under coats of whitewash, which when removed revealed traces enough to enable lists and descriptions [H. D.] to be made before the windows themselves were replaced by new glass.

It is more difficult to trace the Bevys family back to early times than it was when Lyson spoke of it as already done. Perhaps the property in the parish of St. Mary Church. devised by Richard's daughter Alice, may give a clue to Richard's birthplace, though he or she may have bought it, or taken it for a debt. The early parish registers have been destroyed. I find no Bevys will in E. P., D. W., S. W., W. G., or in the P. C. C. published calendars, except that of Nicholas Bevys (so spelled), son of Richard and merchant of Exeter, dated 8 November, 1612, and proved 2 June. 1613 [W. G., p. 1071]. Two of the executors named are "my brother John Marshall and my cousin Ignatius Jourdenn." The latter was Ignatius Jurdaine, baptized at Lyme Regis, 17 August, 1561, son of William. He became Mayor of Exeter and a member of two parliaments. A son-in-law of Jurdaine was William Hill of Lyme Regis and Exeter, later of Dorchester in Massachusetts, arid Fairfield in Connecticut. It may he that William Jurdaine married a sister of Richard Bevys or of his wife. One Elizabeth Bevys, married [R. M. A.] 28 June, 1580, to Richard Denys, must probably have been related to Richard. His daughter Elizabeth was buried 5 February, 1588/9. The other entries concerning his children are scanty and unimportant.

It would seem that Richard Bevys had two wives. On 6 March, 1566/7 [R. M. A.], he married Elizabeth Provs (apparently so written) or Prous, and on 12 July, 1585, "Elizabeth Bevys " was buried. His daughter Alice's will of 1630 names her "mother in law Mistress Jane Martyn." This may be assumed to have been her father's second wife, mother of Peter Bevys. It could not have been her late husband's mother Joan, who was not mentioned in his will, who was apparently married about 80 years before 1630, and who had been left a widow 54 years before that date. Elizabeth Prous (Prouz, Prowse) was probably a relative of Richard Prowse, Mayor of Exeter in 1578 [lzacke). According to the pedigree of Prouz of Chagford, near Exeter, a very old family [Tuckett], Richard the Mayor was second son of Lawrence Prouz of Exeter and Chagford, the estate of Chagford going to Lawrence's eldest son John, who had a daughter Elizabeth, apparently of about the age of the Elizabeth married to Richard Bevys.

They probably both grew up in Stanstead which is 5 miles north of Sudbury. Within two or three years after their marriage, they moved to Sudbury where their children were baptized. Here they must have lived for at least fifteen years. In 1633, Alice got into some sort of dispute with the church authorities, for on 18 February 1633/4, Alice Blower was charged with Contempt of Ecclesiastical Laws before the Court of High Commission. She was fined £100 which was certainly a ruinous amount, which neither she or her husband could raise. This must have been cause for a hasty move to London and an appeal against the fine, for on 26 June 1634, Alice Blower of London, defendant, having long since removed from Sudbury where the offense was given, to London, whereby the scandal was taken away, she was dismissed. (Calendar of Domestic Papers, Charles I) It was this sort of religious harassment that prompted so many to leave England for the New World between 1620 and 1640. Whatever the reason, in September 1635 Thomas Blower, set sail in the Truelove, John Gibbs, Master. The ship arrived in Boston in late November. He was listed as aged 50 on the passenger list and alone. Ages were often mere estimates and in this case he seems to have been actually aged 48. There is no record of a family with him. His daughter Alice had preceeded him to Boston two years earlier as the young bride of Richard Brackett. Three years later, his sister-in-law and her husband, Edmund Rice, also came to New England to join him. Nothing can be found of him in New England records except in the Winthrop Papers there is extant a letter written by one Nathaniel Lufkin to Mr. John Winthrop the elder of Boston from Hitcham, Suffolk, dated 1 April 1640, by which Lufkin was owed £24 by Thomas Blower, the debt having been incurred in England, and Lufkin wished it collected in New England where Blower was then living. Lufkin wrote, ...there is one Edmond Rice and Henry Bruning who the bearer knows well who can tell of the debt as well as myself... Edmund Rice was married to Thomasine (Frost), sister of Thomas Blower's wife, Alice. In the Colonial Records is the following:

9 September 1639 - Capt. Keayne was ordered to pay the 12. l0s which he rec'd of Mr Saltonstall for pt of Mrs Blowers N [necessaries ?] to the treasurer - Rec. of the Mass. Bay 1:273

Thus, Thomas Blower must have died about 1639, which explains the dearth of record of him. Other Blowers, including John, his son, also appear in the New England records. The others were probably all related to him. When his wife Alice died is not known.

Thomas BLOWER was born about 1556 in , , , England. He was buried on 1 Oct 1597 in , Lavenham, Suffolk, England.238

THOMAS BLOWER (Thomas?) a tanner of Lavenharn, Suffolk, England, came from a family that had lived nearby for many generations. In 1464, Thomas Blower of Bildeston made his will and bequeathed to his son John Blower, his son [in-law?] John Cowper of Boxford, and to Thomas Blower who was another son. The will was proved on 23 September of that year. On 7 September 1503, Peter Blower of Melford made his will. No children were mentioned. On 8 October 1481, Mawte [i.e. presumably Maud] Blower of Lavenham made her will and bequeathed her estate to several church and charitable entities, but named no relatives. These were surely relatives of Thomas, perhaps ancestors.

Nicholas Blower of Lavenhana was probably Thomas' brother. Nicholas had the following children recorded there.

NICHOLAS, bapt. 8 Jan. 1575/6; buried 6 Oct. 1577
RACHEL, bapt. 27 April 1578; buried 6 Aug. 1580
RACHEL, bapt. 18 Oct. 1580; buried 26 Oct. 1581

ANNE, bapt. 23 Sept. 1582
SAMUEL, bapt. 2 May 1585
ISAAC, bapt. 26 Nov. 1587
ELIZABETH, bapt. 1 Feb. 1589/90; buried 23 Oct. 1590

Another probable brother to Thomas was Robert Blower of Lavenham whose first wife, Joan, was buried there on 2 March 1563/4. He married secondly, on 12 June 1567/8, Joan Hareknop. Robert Blower was buried 4 June 1585. A Joan Blower, probably his widow, married on 7 April 1591, Edmund Yates. Joan Blower, who was baptized 18 June 1559, was probably the youngest sister of these three Blower men. There is no more record of her. Who were their parents? Rose Blower, wife of Thomas Blower of Lavenham, was buried there on 2 April 1568. She was probably their mother and Thomas, her husband, their father.

Thomas Blower married first, on 10 August 1574 at Long Melford, Suffolk, Alice Sparpointe. She died in 1581, and he married secondly, on 27 February 1581/2 at Bildeston, Susan Vincent, daughter of Andrew and Alice Vincent of Bildeston. Alice was born about 1560.

On 28 September 1597, sick and knowing that death was near, he made his will and died, probably the next day. He was buried at Lavenham on 1 October 1597. Except for the religious preamble, his will is given in full below. No further record of Susan can be found.
