The Trowbridge family derives its name from its ancient inheritance, Trowbridge, in the Parish of Crediton, Devonshire, England. This property was the estate of Peter de Trowbridge, in the reign of Edward I. It was sold by the Trowbridge family, in 1720, to Samuel Strode. The Trowbridges, of Taunton, Somersetshire, were of the Devonshire family, as shown by the coat of arms found in the windows of St. James Church, at Tauton, which is identical with that borne by the Devonshire Trowbridges. John Trowbridge, herein supposed to have been father of Thomas, was the only son and heir of Thomas the elder, a rich merchant of Taunton, whose benefactions and will (drawn 6 July, 1619, proved 6 May, 1620) are given fully in T.F. He was baptized at Taunton on 25 March, 1570 [T.F.J, and was probably married not far from 1595. no record appearing at Taunton either of his marriage or of the baptism of his eldest son Thomas. The baptisms of eight other children are recorded there in regular order, beginning with 8 February, 1598/9. That Thomas was probably John's son and heir is shown by the broad fact that he succeeded John as the chief Trowbridge of Taunton, just as John had succeeded his father; and more particularly by the otherwise unaccountable coincidences between the names of their sons. John's four sons were, in order, Thomas, after his father, John, after himself, William, and James. The identity of the wife, previously unknown, of Thomas Trowbridge (who died 1620) has been learned. She was Joan Lawrence alias Hutchins, daughter of John Lawrence alias Hutchins of St. James Parish, Taunton, presumably by his wife Alice. after whom Joan named her elder daughter Alice Trowbridge. The will of John Lawrence alias Hutchins, dated 7 Sept. [1579?]. proved 12 Sept. 1579, named his son-in-law Thomas Trowbridge. his daughter Joan Trowbridge, his wife Alice, and other relatives. Perhaps John s wife Alice was a Stone, for he made Rbert Stone and George Stone overseers of his will. A few years earlier. John Lawrence alias Hutchins surrendered land to Thomas "Strobridge." reserving life use to his own wife Alice. and the Stones figured also in this conveyance.
A John Lawrence alias Hutchins was named as son in the will of Thomas Lawrence alias Hutchins of Holway in St. Mary Magdalen Parish. Taunton. dated 1 July 1576, proved Jan. 1576/7. Considering the fact that our John was a grandfather when he died in 1579, some three years after Thomas died, it is perhaps more likely that Thomas was brother rather than father of our John.

Thomas was one of the early settlers of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and a merchant engaged in the Barbadoes trade from 1637 to 1639. He returned to Taunton, England about 1644, leaving his three sons, Thomas, William and James. According to the source listed below, Thomas Trowbridge's father was Edmund Trowbridge. Edmund's father was Thomas and Thomas' father was John.

THOMAS TROWBRIDGE, b. ca. 1600, and named in his father John's nuncupative will 1 July 1649 as eldest son (PCC pro. 25 Feb. 1649/50) when he moved from Taunton to Exeter, where he was fined for freeman £12. On 20 Dec. 1624, according to registers of St. Mary Arches, he m. Elizabeth Marshall. In his own parish of St. Petrocks were b. to him: 6 Mar. 1627 Elizabeth; 5 Nov. 1629 John; 11 Dec. 1631 Thomas; Sep. 1633 William. The child Eliz. dv. & John, the s. & h., remained in England, d. 1653: local will, naming John Manning of New England, merchant, Win. Davis of Muskeeta, Newfoundland, implied that he had sailed the sea with father (vide Trowbridge Family). Sons Thomas (Jr.) and William emigrated with parents to Dorchester, Mass., where James Trowbridge was born; they moved to New Haven, where Elizabeth the mother died. Three children remained to have large families. Thomas Sr. (No. 42) returned to Exeter to remarry, by license, widow Frances Shattuck 10 Feb. 1640 in St. David's church. She, his cousin, was dau. of Dorothy, dau. of Thos. Trowbridge (Sr.) (see gen. 41) of Taunton. Thos. Jr. paid £4 subsidy at West Muncton, nr. Taunton. By 1643 they were back in New Haven, a family of 5, rated at £500. When Taunton, under colonel, later admiral Robert Blake, was besieged by the royalists, Thomas (No.42) served as captain in Cromwell's army, 1645. Later, he supported a wounded soldier's pension claim at Taunton Court of Sessions. He gave his New England sons power of attorney for property there 14 Jan. 1664. He and they traded to the Azores from both sides of the Atlantic. He was buried at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Taunton, Somerset, 7 Feb. 1672. (Trowbridge Family (1872); The Gen., cit.).

A slave holder, (s. of Dea. James,) m. Sarah, dr. of Jno. Ward, Jr., Dec. 14, 1708, took the end of his father in law's house. Additional children: two daughters, stillborn, 1720. His will dated 1744, gives 5 pounds to the church, "to be loaned out so as not to depreciate, the interest thereof to be given to such poor widows as the Deacons judge proper." To son James, 200 pounds; Hulda and Mary, 100 pounds each; Margaret, 200 pounds; Beulah, 200 pounds; Thaddeus, 50 pounds; chil. of his dr. Mary Coolidge, 325 pounds; wife Sarah, 50 pounds; and the residue of his estate to Lieut. Joseph Fuller, Lieut. William Hyde, Dea. John Stone, and Thomas Greenwood, in trust, for his w. COLLIER, in his historical dictionary, says, “The Tyrwhitts are considerably ancient, as appears by their being high sheriffs of Lincolnshire 22 EDWARD IV. and of Yorkshire, 14 HENRY VI.” And Philips' describes them as “a family of great honour and antiquity in the county of Lincoln, descended from Robert Tirwhitt, an eminent lawyer in the reigns of Kings HENRY IV. and V. He was first called to the degree of a serjeant, and then constituted one of the justices of the court of Common Pleas, out of which court be was removed to the King's Bench.” Camden speaking of Kettleby, calls it, “The seat of the famous family of the Tirwhitts, knights, who now reside at Stanfield.”

EDWARD TYRWHITT, esq. who settled himself at Stanfield, and marrying Anne, daughter of William Dallyson, esq. of Loughton, in Linco]nabire, and sister of Sir William ballyson, one of the judges of the court of King's Bench, had two sons, PHILIP (Sir), and Roger. The elder,
I.Sir PHILIP TYRWHITT, succeeded to the estate at Stainfield, and with his eldest son, Edward, waited upon King James I. at Belvoir Castle, when his majesty reposed there in his way from Scotland to take possession of the crown, and had the honour of knighthood conferred upon himself and his said son. He was afterwards created a BARONET 29th June, 1611. Sir Philip so. Martha, daughter of Sir Anthony Thorold, hot. of Marston, and dying 5th February, 1024, was a. by his son,

the city of Lincoln, who d. unm. 22nd August, 1760, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED. In 1776, his kinsman, Thomas Drake, esq. of Shardeloes, assumed the additional surname of TYRWHITT, upon inheriting the estates under the will of Sir John-de-la-Fountain Tyrwhitt (refer to BURKE'S Commoners, vol. I. page 580).

He married ANNE CONSTABLE, daughter of Robert Constable, Knt., of Flamborough, Yorkshire, by Agnes, daughter of Roger Wentworth, Esq. They had two sons and two daughters. He was knighted at Stoke in 1487, and was made a Banneret at Blackheath in 1497. SIR WILLIAM TYRWHIT died 9 April 1522, and was buried in lincoln Cathedral.
