The Will of HENRY ROLFF the elder of Hamptworth in the parish of Downton, cc. Wylts, husbandman, 5 May 1558. To he buried in the church lytten of St. Lawrence in Downton. To our lady church in Sarum 2d. To the reparation of my parish church in Downton 3d. To Ails Whytehere, my servant, a ewe and a lamb, my wife's petticoat, etc. To the children of my sister Margaret Blake of Playtford a ewe lamb among them. To Elisabeth Blaake my wife's black bat. To Agnes Saunders children a bullock among them. To Agnes Bampton a frock. To William Hvekeman my best "hooses." To Dennys Husse a brass pot. ESTATE OF HONOR ROLPE OF NEWBURY. "Henry Largiu of Charlstowne ------ house of Thomas Blanchard on n----- where widdow Honour Rolfe lay ----- berry lay sick. Shee did declare h------ be; that her sonne Beniam Rolfe should haue the substance of her estate, which was her owne pp estate, & that he should be her sole Executor. Only she gaue these pticulers as followeth, her bedding & Clothes linnen and woollen she gaue to be equally deuided betwixt her two daughters. To the church of [Whiteparish] 64., to be used towards the reparation of the church by the church wardens of White-parish. Concerning my right and interest in certain leases of which I now stand possessed, after my decease my son [ ]Rolfe he shall have that messuage or tenement and close adjoining, and that close called long [ ] adjoining to Bushy lease, and that close called breach meade, and a parcel [ ] sometimes parcel of bushy lease and lying upon the lane called Rumsey [ ] containing fourteen "lugge," all being in Whiteparish, and also four [?pieces of] arable land containing ten acres called Webb [?close] with a messuage which I hold of the right [ ] William Stockman of Bereford, county Wilts, Esq., by virtue of a [?lease] dated 20 March 8 James I, to hold the said lease and premises until the full term of ninety nine years be ended, if myself, Henry Rolfe, my son, and John Rolfe the younger, my son, or any of us, live so long. She married (2nd) by royal license dated 1 Jan. 1358/9 THOMAS DE ROOS (or ROS), Knt., 4th Lord Roos of Helmsley, of the castles and manors of Helmsley, Yorkshire and Chilham, Kent, Joint Warden of the West March of Scotland and of the East March, 3rd son of William de Roos, 2nd Lord Roos of Helmsley, by Margery, daughter of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, Knt., 1st Lord Badlesmere. He was born at Stoke Albany, Northamptonshire 13 Jan. 1336/7, and was heir in 1352 to his older brother, William de Roos, Knt., 3rd Lord Roos of Helmsley. They had four sons, John, Knt. 15th Lord Roos of Helmsley], William, Krnt., K.G. [6th Lord Roos of Helmsley], Thomas, and Robert, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. He took part in the King's expedition in Normandy in 1355, and in the campaigns of 1356 and 1359-60. He was summoned to Parliament from 24 August 1362 to 1383. In 1368 he was ordered to reside on his lands in Ireland with his armed forces to prevent the loss and destruction of the country. In 1369 and 1374 he served in France.
