EARLY GRIGGS FAMILIES OF MASSACHUSETTS

There were four Griggs families in and around Boston before 1640. So far as has been ascertained there was no connection between any of them. Something has been written about each one but in every account there have been omissions or errors. The purpose of this article is to correct these. The research on which this account is based has not been exhaustive in that only published material has been consulted.

THOMAS, b. 1619/20; d. probably unmarried before July 1655 since he was not mentioned in his father's will. Clarence Bowen's History ofWoodstock, Conn., vol. 6, p. 96, states that he married MARY____ and was buried in Roxbury 29 Nov. 1639. A footnote says that according to family records he d. 29 Nov. 1632. All these statements are in error. The person who was buried 29 Nov. 1659 was Mary, not Thomas Griggs (The Vital Records of Roxbury. vol. 2, p. 540), who was the wife of another Thomas Griggs of Roxbury, with which place the family of George Griggs had no connection. Obviously Thomas, son of George, could not have died in 1652 since he came to Boston three years later in 1635.

THOMAS GRIGGS of Roxbury, born perhaps about 1585, died in Roxbury, Mass., 23 May 1646 (Vital Records of Roxbury., Mass., vol. 2, p. 540) where he "lay in a long affliction of sickness and shined like gold in it, greatly magnifying his grace in Christ" (Boston Record Commissioners: Rox bury Church Records, p. 173). He married, first, about 1615, probably in England, MARY who died in Roxbury, Mass., 29 Nov. 1639 (Vital Records of Roxbury, Mass., vol. 2, p. 540). He married, secondly, in Roxbury, 26 Aug. 1640 (ibid., p. 182) Mary GREEN, probably widow of John Green who died in 1638/9. She married (3) in Roxbury, 8 June 1651, Jasper Rawlins.

Thomas Griggs was in Roxbury by 1636 when he owned twelve acres there.
It is suggested by J. W. Linzee, Jr., in his Ancestors and Descendants of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles, 1913, p. 475, that Thomas was a son of John and Martha Griggs of Boxted, co. Suffolk, England, born in 1585 whose ancestral chart is reproduced on page 475 from Joseph James Muskett's Suffolk Manorial Families, 1900, vol. 1, p. 265. However, there seems to be no proof whatever of the identity of the two Thomases. It might equally well be claimed that George, son of John and Martha Griggs of Boxted, given in the same chart as born in 1595, was the George, subject of the first part of this article. The age very nearly corresponds. The latter George, however, is given in the shipping list as of Landon, Bucks. A search of the wills or estates of John and Martha Griggs of Boxted might reveal the validity or falseness of either or both of these assumptions.

Clarence Bowen in his History of Woodstock, vol. 6, states that this Thomas Griggs was born in 1603 (which might well he) and that he came to New England in 1635. He claims also that Thomas first wife was Grace Wells (not Mary ). This writer has been unable to determine the source of such statements, but, because much of Bowen s account of the Griggs families is erroneous, not much reliance can be placed on any of the statements about the Griggs families.

Elizabeth Grosvenor, married Thomas Bulkeley of Woore, Shropshire; grandparents of Rev. Peter Bulkeley and of Peter's several sisters, who left numerous descendants in the United States. The will of Randall Grosvenor (23 Feb. 1558/9, inventory dated 3 Mar. 1559/ 60), naming both his daughter Elizabeth Bulkeley and his son-in-law Thomas Bulkeley, is printed verbatim in The Bulkeley Genealogy, pp. 10-11; and the long will of Thomas Bulkeley, which names his son Edward Bulkeley and his daughter-in-law Olive Bulkeley, is printed verbatim therein, pp. 888-890. The Rev. Edward and Olive (Irby) Bulkeley were the parents of the Rev. Peter Bulkeley. Parents: Randall GROSVENOR and Anne CHARLTON.

Randall GROSVENOR^{78,106,107,228,322} was born about 1480.³⁰⁴ He signed a will on 23 Feb 1558/59 in , , , England.³²³ He died about 1559 in , Bellaport, Shropshire, England.³⁰⁴

ANNE CHARLTON, born about 1480. She married about 1500 RANDALL GROSVENOR, Esq., of Bellaport (in Muckleston), Shropshire, son of Randall Grosvenor, Esq., of Bellaport (in Mudkleston), Shropshire, by Margaret, daughter of Randall Mainwaring, of Caringham. He was born about 1482 (aged 40 in 1522). They had five sons, Thomas, Geoffrey, Robert, Randall, and Henry, and three daughters, Katherine (wife of_____ Nash), Elizabeth (wife of Thomas Culbery), and Margery. RANDALL GROSVENOR, Esq. died shortly before 3 March 1559/60 (date of inventory). He left a will dated 23 Feb. 1558/9, proved 3 May 1560, requesting burial in the high chancel of Muckleston “nye to the buryall of my father.” Parents: Randell GROSVENOR and Margaret MANWARING.

JOHN AT HECCHE, of Sellinge, in the hundred of Street, co. Kent, the testator of 1464, was born probably about 1415 and died not earlier than 15 Nov. 1464. He married AGNES , who was living when his will was made. He was probably a miller. He was undoubtedly descended from some of the Atte Hacches found in the hundred of Calehill, in the subsidies of 1327/8 and 1372/3. These subsidies do not name the parishes in which the persons assessed lived; but the hundred of Calehill comprised the parishes of Charing, Westwell, Egerton, Little Chart,, and Pluckley, as well as parts of several other parishes. Contemporary with the above John at Hecche of Seliinge were several of the name in Charing, probably his brothers and causins, who left wills not given in this article. The mention of his lands in Westwell and Charing places his origin in that ancient Atte Hacche family, and he is the first of the name in Sdllinge or vicinity of whom record has been found. His will names his wife Agnes and three sons.

The Will of JOHN AT HECCHE of Sellyng next Monks Horton [co. Kent], 15 November 1464. My body to be buried in the churchyard of Selling. To the high altar there 12d. To the light of the Holy Trinity 6d. To the light of the Cross 6d. To the light of the Blessed Virgin 6d. To the light of the Blessed Mary under the High Cross 6d. My woods upon my lands at Westwell and Charing to be sold to pay my debts and legacies. My feoffees to permit Agnes my wife if she remain my widow, to hold all my other lands and tenements until Thomas at hecche, my son, shall come to the age of twenty-four years, when he shall have one third of the lands. My son John to have a third of the lands when he shall come to the age of twenty-four years; and when my son William shall come to the age of twenty-four years, then my feoffees shall make over the lands to my three sons equally, forever, they paying to Agnes their mother 20s. a year during her life. If all my sons die before the age of twenty-four, then my wife Agnes shall have the lands for her life and after her death they shall be sold and the money shall be employed to provide a chantry priest to sing and pray in the church of Selling for the space of two years, the residue to be expended in charity for the poor of Selling and for the souls of my father and mother and all the faithful departed. If my wife shall marry before the said Thomas, John, and William reach their full ages [i.e., twenty-four years], my feoffees shall allow her 20s. a year and shall use the remainder of the profits of my lands for my sons and for the repair of my messuages and mills. JOHN HATCHE THE YOUNGER (Thomas, Thomas, John), of Sellinge, co. Kent, the testator of 1535, born probably about 1495, died between 13 Apr. 1535 and 26 Apr. 1536. His wife, whose name is unknown, is mentioned in his will. By the will of his father, proved in 1534, he succeeded to lands and tenements in Sellinge, including a "new house," which in the following year he devised to his three sons. His five eldest children are named in the will of his father
