CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Weymouth church prior to 2 September 1635 implied by freemanship.
FREEMAN: 2 September 1635 (fifth in a sequence of six Weymouth men [MBCR 1:371]).
ESTATE: In the Weymouth land inventory of about 1642, "Robert Lovell" held four parcels: "one acre and a quarter in the West Field first given to him"; "six acres and half in King Oak Hill first given to himself"; "fifteen acres near the mill"; and "thirty acres in the Great Lots" [Weymouth Hist 1:196].
In his will, dated 3 April 1651 and proved 25 June 1672, "Robert Lovell of Weymouth" bequeathed "my dwelling house & the land adjoining to it to my loving wife to possess & enjoy all the time of her widowhood," and "my dwelling house & land before mentioned unto my son John after my wife's widowhood"; to "my son John four acres of land that was of Carpenter's & three acres of land bought of Hart & … half half the meadow that I bought of Smith & half the meadow that I bought of Holebrooke & … my lot by the mill which is eighteen acres"; to "my son James my Great Lot which is thirty-six acres & … the other half of the meadow before mentioned that was bought of Smith & likewise that of Holebrooke's"; to "my son-in-law Andrew Forde one of my heifers"; to "Andrew Ford's eldest son one of my heifers"; to "Andrew Ford's youngest son " a calf; to "John Lovell's son my yearling bull"; "my loving wife to be my sole executrix" [SPR 7:217].

COMMENTS: The passenger list of the Marygould gives the ages in early 1635 of the two youngest children as one, clearly implying that they were twins. The next eldest child was born about 1627, further implying a gap of about seven years between this child and the two youngest. The age given by Ellen in a deposition, and the likely date of her marriage, indicate that she was a few years older than stated on the passenger list. She was not, then, a twin of Lovell, and her more likely date of birth partially fills the gap between John and James. Pope states that Robert Lovell "received arms from Pynchon in 1636" [Pope 203]. On 2 June 1640, "Elizabeth Lovell was admonished [by the Massachusetts Bay General Court] for her immodest expressions, enjoined to pay the witnesses, & so was dismissed" [MBCR 1:297]. (This woman is not explicitly stated to be of Weymouth or to be wife of Robert Lovell, but she seems to be the only woman of the name in Massachusetts Bay at the time.)

The following is quoted from Mansfield Genealogy by Daland and Mansfield:

ANDREW MANSFIELD (Robert1) was born in England about 1620. He came to Boston in 1636 and to Lynn in 1639 before his father (Lewis and Newhall, p. 187). On 26 March 1661 being then about 38 years old, he made affidavit to the Court at Ipswich, Mass., that he had been an inhabitant of Lynn about 22 or 23 years and in June 1669 "about 49 years old, he testified in court concerning the estate of Frances Axey." (Records and files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Mass. Vol. VIII 1680-1683 p. 256-257, also Warner).

Andrew was very active in Town affairs. He was made freeman 8 July 1645. He was a selectman, was on committees for laying out roads and settling land disputes. He served as trial juror and on Grand Jury 1650-1677. He was called "sergeant" from 15 March 1663. This showed the confidence which the people had for his legal ability. "There are many letters on file in the clerk of the courts office of Essex County in his clear legiable handwriting showing his ability and that the esteem in which he was held was well merited. He was deputy to the General Court from l880-1883 inclusive. By reference to the Court records it wilt be seen that he was entrusted by that body with important commissions." (Moulton).

Andrew was married three times; 1st about 1850 to BETHIAH who died 2 July 1672. Bethiah's maiden name may have been Gedney (Lynn Hist. Register 1913) or Townsend (Warner-Harrington Genealogy). He married second 4 June 1673, MRS. MARY NEAL, widow of John Neal and only child of Francis Lawes, a wealthy citizen of Salem. She died 27 June 1681. He married third, 10 Jan. 1661-82, MRS. ELIZABETH CONANT widow of Lot Conant of Beverly and daughter of Rev. Wm. and Elizabeth Walton of Marblehead. She was born in England, baptized at the Parish of Seaton, Devonshire 27 Oct. 1629. She died 29 Sept. 1674. She had 10 children by her first marriage and two of her sons, Nathaniel and John Conant had previously married two of Andrew's daughters. Andrew lived in Beverly for a time after he married Elizabeth Conant.

Andrew's will was dated 1 June 1679, with a codicil dated at Boston 19 Nov. 1683. It seems that while attending the General Court he was taken suddenly and seriously ill, as the codicl was witnessed by members of the court then in session. The Exact date of his death is not known but the inventory of his estate was returned to the Probate Court 28 Nov. 1683, nine days after the codicil was made (Moulton).

The last will & testimonye of John Mansfield of Lynn in the Countye of Essex this 23th of September Ario Domni 1670: Impr: I bequeath my bodye to the earth, & my spirritt to god that gave it 2ly I bequeath unto - my Cozen Danel Gott, his now wife & his heires whether male or female Lawfully begotten of his now wife (viz) after my death, & my wifes & my - whole accomodatton in houseing Lands, & Meadow with all comons, Libertyes, & prvilidges what soe ever there unto be Longing for ever: upon these Consideracons, Following: 1st if it shall soe please the Lord that they both shall depte this Life without a Lawfull heire sarviueing them as above Sd then the Sd liveing to fall to my brother Andrew Mansfeild & his children; 3ly I also bequeath to my Cozen Danel Gott all (my) neate Cattle & Sheep & Horse carts chaines plow & Tooles I may be possessed of at my death in Consideracon yt he Is to remove his Familye & come to live with me & my wife att Lynn, dureing our lives & carry on our housbandrye affaires for my Familye for us (and them) as alsoe upon this Consideration that in case my Cozen Danel Gott, it shall please the Lord to take him awaye by death before us, then the sd liveing to be to us or ether of us dureing or lives & then to him & his heires as above Sd. I bequeath to my maid servant Elizabeth Brookes one three yeare ould heifer or a Cowe- when her tyme is out, & it is-to be paid by my Cozen Dan Gott uppon Consideracon of the Respictive Legacyes aboue sd. I bequeath to or Reverend Pastor Mr Samel Whiting one Cowe to bee paid with in one yeare after my decease my Cozen Danel Gott upon the account alsoe of the afforesd Legasyes if then hee bee Liveing that is if mr Whiteing be Liveing. I bequeath to mr. Nathan Handforth two pounds to be paide in one year after my decease by my cozen Danel Gott uppon the accounte alsoe of the afforesd Lagecyes, if then the said Nathan bee living. I bequeath to my brother Andrew my great Bible after my owne & my wifes decease. - I make my Loveing & faithful wife, my Lawfull executrix of all the rest of my estate. Daniel Gott, formerly belonging to Lynn, for many years possessed and enjoyed the estate of John Mansfield, late of Lynn, by virtue of a will made by him wherein he bequeathed to him all his estate on condition he did live with him and carry on his work so long as he and his wife should live; but as he never performed the conditions of the will, (he) is fully satisfied that he has no honest right to the estate, but that it belongs to the Mansfields. by a later will which he is informed was by indirect means made away with. -

RORERT MANSFIELD was born in England about 1594 (1797 Mr. and Mrs. Warner) and died at Lynn, Mass., 16 Dec, 1666 (Lynn V,R.) and married ELIZABETH in England.

Robert, with his wife Elizabeth. their son Joseph and daughter Elizabeth came from England to Lynn, Massachusetts about 1640. Their sons Andrew and John had preceded them in Lynn, as shown by two recorded depositions made by Andrew. At a court held in Ipswich 26 March 1661 Andrew Mansfield, aged about 38 years, made affidavit that he had been an inhabitant of Lynn "aboute two or three and twentyc yeares." (Lewis and Newhall, History of Lynn, 1865 ed., p, 17E). On 30 Nov. 1062, before the court at lpswich, in the case of Brown vs. Laughton, Andrew stated (Quarterly Courts of Essex Co., Vol. VIII' pp. 25e-257)that "about 43 years since (1639), he and his brother John bought of Mr. Manton, so called, a little house and house-lot and planting lot belonging to it in Lynn, and that the next summer their father, Robert. came into the country and they surrendered it up to him." It seems probable that Andrew and John came to Boston as early as 1636.

Where the Robert Mansfield family came from in England is not clear. They are said to have come from Exeter, Devonshire (Ms. Genealogy # 166, The Mansfield Family, in the Lynn Historical Society library.- Lewis and Newhall, p.187; Dr. Joseph Mansfield genealogy Ms, and manuscript of Charles F. Mansfield and Charles E. Lord, The Ancestors and Descendants of Lt. Tobias Lord, 1913, p. 191). Other Sources say that they probably came from Norfolk County. Moulton says "investigations In England by C, H, Townsend Esq. of New Haven tend to show they came from Norfolk County whence came many of the early settlers of Lynn" also in manuscripts by Helen Mansfield, and Helen Lawton and Chandler's History of New Ipswich, N.H. It has not been possible to find any documentary evidence for either Exeter or Norfolk County.

Robert's wife. Elizabeth, was born in 1566 (Warner) and died at Lynn. 8 Sept 1673 (Lynn V.R.). Her will (Probate Records of Essex County. II. 382-383) was dated 30 April 1667 was proved in Salem Court, 26 Nov. 1673, and was attested by her son Joseph. Elizabeth's maiden name is not known. By some authors it is called Townsend (History of New Ipswich, N.H. and Old Foxcroft, Maine). The Townsend family came to Lynn at the same time as the Mansfields. Thomas Townsend (1591-1677)owned land next to that of the Mansfields in Lynn. He had a sister Elizabeth.

"The Last will & testament of Robert Mansfield of Lynn in the County of Essex beeing weake in body hut of pfect memory: the third day of August Anno: Dam 1664 miprimis I bequeath, my body to the dust my spent to God that gave it 2dly I bequeath to my sonn Joseph Mansfield my whole Acomadation in buildings lands & meddow, exsept 3 acres that I bought of John Deken weh lyeth in the neck by Jo. Administration upon the estate of Samuel Mansfield, was granted 24: 4: 1679, to Sarah, the relict, and she to administer according to that writing presented to the court, which is an agreement made by her consent with the parties subscribed, and she also presented an inventory.

Whereas Samuell Mansfeild of Lynn died of the smallpox leaving a wife and three children, the eldest of them being a son, the nearest relations on both sides, the father of Samuel Mansfield, and the father of the wife, with the consent of the wife, chose and impowered Mr. Thomas Loughton, Sr., Andrew Mansfeield and Nathaniell Bersham to divide the estate which is as follows: "the estate being inventoried amounted to 154£. 8s. 6d., debts 17£. 4s. 7d. being provided for, leaving 137£. 3g. lid.; to the widow, a third part of the estate as her proper estate, 45£. 14s. 8d.; to the son Andrew Mansfeild, 4 acres of upland ajoyning westerly along his granfather Mansfield's house lott & three acres of salt marsh in Rumnye marsh ajoyneing northelye uppon his grandfather's marsh & 7£. 14s. 8d. to be paid by the estate in the widow's hand, 45£. 14s. 8d.; the two daughters, 22£. 17s. 4d. per peice out of the estate in the widdow's hand, 45£. 14g. 8d." The widow to have the whole estate until the children respectively come to age, but if the widow die before then, they are to have their portions. The remaining part of the land and dwelling house to be as security, the widow to keep the house and all fences in good repair. This being also to be understood that Samuell Mansfeild, deceased, as his last words on his death bed, gave unto his father Andrew Mansfeild, his son Andrew above mentioned, until he come to twenty one years of age, and his said father accepted of him. Elizabeth, first wife of Thomas Trowbridge, and mother of his children, was bapt. at St. Mary Arches Church, Exeter, 24 Mar. 1562 of a family at the centre of commercial and civic power in the cathedral city. This was amply' set forth in 1905 in an article by Emory McClintock, Thomas Trowbndge and Elizabeth Marshall, NEHGR 59:291-97 (1905). Elizabeth's father, the Alderman John Marshall, Mayor in 1615, was d. by' the dau.'s marriage. Her mother Alice was the second dau. of the name, bapt. at St. Kerrians Church, Exeter, 7 June 1572, and Marshall's bride 30 Aug. 1695 at St. Mary Arches. Mice, bur. there 13 Jan. 1630/1, left to her favourite dau. Mrs Elizabeth Trowbridge, £50 and a £10 piece of plate (PCC 23 St. John). Alice's father was Richard Beavis, who d. in office as Mayor of Exeter 26 Aug. 1603. He had in. (1) Elizabeth Price, from the Welsh "Ap Rhys", mother of Alice Marshall,and (2) Jane, dau. of Henry Huish of Sands. Dr. McClintock misread Price for Prowse in the register, a possible dau. to Lawrence Prowse of Chagford. This, in turn, led to more error in the Mormon records. By 1909 The Rev. J.T.G. Donaldson, whose own family had inherited the Beavis pedigree and papers, published the true names in Trans. of The Devonshire Association, 41:215-240 (in article as Bevys'). He also showed that the Beavis pedigree was not proven beyond Richard's own parents John and Christina. Donaldson also published therein his main muniment: the 21 ft. parchment roll of Richard Beavis' Inventory of his estate.' (The Gen., Cu.).

Gilbert The MARSHALL¹⁰¹⁹ died in 1130.¹⁰¹⁹

GILBERT THE MARSHAL died in or shortly after 1130.
His wife's name is unknown. He was the first known holder of the office of Master Marshal in the King's Household, claimed by hereditary right, although the office was, in 1135, considered to be one only of the third rank. The Marshal was in immediate charge of the horses, and was subordinate to the Constables, who controlled the stables, kennels and mews, in fact, everything connected with the King's sport. He left lands in Wiltshire to his son John.
