Photo Kezia PRESBURY was born in 1686/87 in , , Massachusetts, USA.1146 She died on 20 Apr 1764 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, USA.1146

The following is a research report by Andrew Pierce:

Robert S. Wakefield's Mayflower Families Through Five Generations: Family of Richard Warren(1999) offers the most up-to-date analysis of Keziah(Presbury?) Freeman, who was born in 1687/88(according to age on death record?), was named as a granddaughter of Stephen Skiffe of Sandwich in his will, dated 1701 (Wakefield's sketch does not say whether a surname is given for her in the will). She married Edmond Freeman at Sandwich in 1706; a codicil to Stephen Skiffe's will in 1708 noted that Keziah 'was given her things upon marriage.'

It is apparent from the analysis that Keziah was not a daughter of Stephen Presbury, either by his wife Deborah Skiffe(daughter of Stephen)or by a theoretical first wife. Assuming that the age on his tombstone is correct(d.1730 at 58), he was born ca.1672, and was not necessarily the same Stephen Presbury who witnessed a deed at Kittery, Maine in 1686. We know that he married Deborah Skiffe by 1694, when their daughter Mary was born. They had seven daughters and one son, all of whom(or whose issue)are mentioned in Stephen Presbury's will, and they do not include Keziah.

Banks' only reason for giving Stephen Presbury of the Vineyard a birth date of 'ca.1666' is the 1686 Maine deed, and I maintain there is no evidence that the two Stephens were identical. I have found old Yankee New England gravestone dates to be largely accurate, and there is no reason to believe that Stephen Presbury was not born ca.1672 and married a woman four years older. Banks' statement that he was 'probably older than his wife' is, in this context, entirely without foundation.

My eight-year research into the Native American history of Martha's Vineyard(to be published by GPC in about two years) noticed several flimsy conjectures, and some outright mistakes, made by Banks in sketching both white and Native families, and these have also been noticed by other Vineyard historians & genealogists such as Katherine (Kay) Mayhew of the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society.

Unless there is something I missed, I do not think there is any evidence at all that Keziah WAS a Presbury. This is only stated, without any corroborating evidence, in the 1875 Freeman Genealogy, in which many other conjectures seem to be made based upon hearsay. There is no marriage for Edmund & Keziah in any VRs, and the marriage date of ca.1706 is apparently only based on the birth date of their eldest child, 1708 in Sandwich.

All we know for certain(and even that is not ironclad, looking at Wakefield's sketch) is that Keziah(last name uncertain), born ca.1688, was a granddaughter of Stephen & Lydia (Snow) Skiffe of Sandwich. She may have been born out of wedlock to one of their daughters(so further records of those daughters might be searched down), and not necessarily by Deborah, or by any of the daughters known to exist, either; a daughter or even a son might have died before Stephen Skiffe made his will in 1701, leaving Keziah.

Scanning the long list of Edmond & Keziah's children, I notice they named eldest daughter Lydia, a son Stephen, a son Skeffe, and a daughter Deborah, all names found in the Skiffe family. There are no children named Keturah, Dorcas, Drusilla or Content, all unusual names found among Stephen & Deborah (Skiffe) Presburys' children. It would seem that if Keziah had belonged to the Presburys and been raised by them on the Vineyard, she would have given some of her fourteen children the names of these putative half-sisters. This is obviously not hard evidence either way, but should be considered circumstantial. My opinion is that Keziah was born and raised in Sandwich, never left there and was possibly not even Deborah's daughter, and certainly not Stephen Presbury's.

The above is an example of connections based on flimsy or non-existent evidence, which compounds itself through numerous repetitions in the IGI, published genealogies, etc. The good news is that since Keziah was almost certainly a granddaughter of Stephen & Lydia(Snow)Skiffe, she would have a proven Mayflower descent through Lydia.

Sincerely,
Andrew Pierce

Archibald F. Bennett, Saviors on Mount Zion, p.118 Returning to the search and a wise use of the card catalog, reveals the names and families of thirty-one progenitors of Elijah Freeman on a dozen different lines. On each line there is a printed genealogy. Also printed vital records of the various towns where these families live give elusive connections not found by the family genealogists. By judicious use of these last records Kezia Presbury, paternal grandmother of Elijah Freeman, is traced back to her 2nd great-grandfather, Richard Warren, who came in 1620 as one of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower, the 5th great, grandfather of Olive Hovey Freeman Farr!

Re: Stephen Skiff

Dear Tim, Welcome to the group of frustrated descendants of Keziah! The will information is from the will itself of Stephen Skiff I have a Xerox of it from Barnstable County. The pages are 137-139, but they did not send the book number. I could Xerox the Xerox if you want to pay for copies and postage, but I can assure you that there is no surname for Keziah.

I also have a Xerox of the will of Stephen Presbury, 6 Apr. 1730, 1 July 1730, Edgartown, Dukes Co., MA, 2:56-57. To granddaughter Moriah PRESBURY, only surviving child of son John, decd. To wf. Deborah. Remainder to my seven daughters or their heirs: heirs of dau. Mary, deed.; daus. Katurah; Dorcus; Abigail; Drusilla; and youngest daughters Content and Sarah. [The will is comparatively easy to read, and it is definitely Katurah, not Keziah. It also says "my seven daughters."]

I have contacted lots of people about this. R. A. Lovell, the Sandwich genealogist, thinks that Kezia was dau/o Stephen PRESBURY but not of Deborah. However, that does not make sense at all considering the two wills.

I contacted the Mayflower Society. The latest answer said that "Keziah who married Edmund Freeman is undoubtedly the granddaughter of Stephen Skiff,' but they do not accept the lineage.

Bob Henderson, 62 Summer Ave., Reading, MA 01867, answered my query in Nexus in 1991. He agrees that Keziah had to have been born Ca. 1688-90, which is before the marriage of Stephen PRESBURY and Deborah SKIFF. He asks why Stephen SKIFF was providing such a generous gift to granddaughter Keziah if her father were living and she had seven sisters. [A cow was worth more than a house to most people at that time.]

Have you analyzed the named of Keziah's children? She had Lydia (for Lydia SNOW), Stephen (Stephen SKIFF), Deborah (Deborah SKIFF); Abigail (for Abigail WARREN).

My conclusion is that Keziah must have been an illegitimate daughter of Deborah SKIFF, and she had probably been living with and caring for her grandparents. The only other alternative that makes sense is that Deborah had a prior marriage, but I haven't found any evidence of that.

Do you have any additional thoughts on the matter? Have you done any
research on the wife of the preceding Edmund FREEMAN, Sarah __

Dukes County originally consisted of the parent towns of Tisbury, Chilmark, and Edgartown which are now divided into seven towns: Tisbury, West Tisbury, Chilmark, Gay Head, Gosnold, Edgartown, and Oak Bluffs.

Tisbury was originally called "Middletown" until it was incorporated as the Town of Tisbury in 1671. It includes (and is now often synonymous with) the village of Vineyard Haven, which was called Holmes Hole until 1871.

STEPHEN PRESBURY. (The following is from "The Annals of Tisbury" by Dr. Charles Edward Banks, c. 1908, Vol.II)

He was probably the son of John Presbury, a shoemaker, sometime of Salisbury and later of Saco, Maine, where in 1670 he had bought a tract of land. [York Deeds, III, 42. John of Saco was probably the son of that John of Sandwich, Cape Cod, whose death in May, 1648, is recorded.]

This John died in that Province before Nov. 3, 1684, leaving three sons, of whom one was Stephen, and the name is so unusual and without recurrence at that period, that we can assume the relationship fairly established. [Ibid, V(I), 35.] This Stephen was a witness to a deed in Kittery, Maine, in 1686, and the next we learn of him is in 1704 when he was called 'of Chilmark, ' meaning that part of it known as Chickemmoo. [Dukes Deeds, III, 77; comp. York Deeds, IV, 134.] It is not known where he had resided in the eighteen years intervening, but it can be surmised that he may have gone to Sandwich, Cape Cod, where he married, about 1693, Deborah, daughter of Stephen and Lydia (Snow) Skiffe of that town. His homestead was at the head of the Lagoon within the boundary line of Edgartown, but his closer proximity to the settlement at Homes Hole, where he lies buried, makes his classification as an early settler of this region the natural one. [He was a land owner in the three towns. (Deeds, III, 114, 504; IV, 108, 217).] His residence here was absolutely without incident of any kind, as he held no offices, appeared in court once as a plaintiff (1729) and in all the twenty-five years of his life on the Vineyard he did not so much as witness a deed or document of any kind, an unusual fact. His will, dated April 6, 1730, was proved June 30, 1730, and disposes of his property to 'my seven daughters' and the children of his only son John, deceased. [Dukes Probate, II, 56.] He had died May 17, I730 in his 58th year and his widow Deborah survived, dying March II, 1743, in the 73d year of her age. [These are the gravestone records, but both seem to be incorrect. The birth of Deborah Skiffe is recorded in Sandwich on July 14, 1668, and thus she was in her 74th year. The age given on his stone would make his birth year 1672-3, but in 1686 he was a witness in Maine. He was probably older than his wife.]

ROBERT DE QUENcY, lord of Buckley and of Fawside died before Michaelmas 1197.
He married first ORABLE (or Orabella), daughter and de facto heiress of Nes, son of William, Lord OF LEUCHARs; apparently they separated. He married second Eve, who survived him and was perhaps a member of the House of Galloway. Eve had been the widow of, or married secondly, Walter de Berkeley, Chamberlain of Scotland.

He apparently went to Scotland in his youth as he witnessed a charter which may date from 1163. He obtained lands in Leuchars, Tranent, Lathrisk, Beith and Nesgask, perhaps through his wife's rights inherited from her mother. He was granted the ancient castle of Forfar by his cousin, King William, during whose reign he made many grants to religious houses and witnessed royal grants in Scotland. He accompanied King Richard I of England to the Holy Land in 1190, was Constable of a force to take aid toAntioch in July 1191, and was sent with the Duke of Burgundy to Tyre to collect prisoners from Philip Augustus that August. He fought in Normandy in 1194 'and 1196.

Photo Roger de QUINCY 2nd Earl of Winchester212,525,760 was born in 1195 of Winchester, Hampshire, England. He died on 25 Apr 1264 in , , , England.104,214

ROGERL DE QUINCY, Earl of Winchester, died without male issue 25 April 1264, and was probably buried at Brackley, Leicestershire, his Earldom reverting to the Crown.
He married first HELEN OF GALLOWAY, second but first surviving daughter and coheir of Alan, Lord of Galloway, Constable of Scotland, who died in 1234. Helen died after 21 Nov. 1245 and was buried at Brackley. He married second, before 5 June 1250, Maud de Bohun, widow of Anselm Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, who died in Dec. 1245, and daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, by Maud, daughter of Raoul (Ralph) de Lusignan, Count of Eu. The younger Maud was not very old when she died without issue in Grosby, Leicestershire, 20 Oct. 1252 and was buried at Brackley. He married third, without license, before 5 Dec. 1252, Eleanor (or Alianole) de Ferrers, widow of William de Vaux (who had died without issue shortly before 14 Sept. 1252), and seventh daughter of William de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby, by his first wife, Sybil (of whom Eleanor was coheir). Almena RANDALL was born on 28 Nov 1814 in Madrid, St. Lawrence, New York, USA.635 She died on 27 Feb 1891 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA.635

Our Pioneer Heritage, Vol. 5, p.196
As the St. Lawrence River leaves Lake Ontario, it flows in a northeasterly direction and on into southern Canada, thus forming part of the boundary line between the United States and Canada. To the east lies Lake Champlain and to the south the Mohawk Valley. This section of the state of New York is known as St. Lawrence County. Early day records give little information as to the exact locations of birthplaces, consequently the birthplace of Almina Randall is designated merely as St. Lawrence County, New York. The date of her birth is given as 28 November 1814. Almina's parents were Henry and Sarah Randall.

The Henry Randall family were staunch Methodists and as such took part in the community in which they resided until 1834, when they moved to Niagara County, New York. Niagara County is joined on the south by Erie County, on the north by Lake Ontario, and on the west by the Niagara River which includes the great Niagara Falls. Into this region came Samuel Milliner, a convert from Edinburgh, Scotland. In April, 1843 Almina Randall was baptized a member of the Church by Samuel Milliner, and in 1845 she migrated to Nauvoo, Illinois. Here she found confusion and the disorder which existed prior to the expulsion of the Saints the following spring. Evidently Almina Randall was not accompanied to Nauvoo by members of her family. It became necessary for such members of the Church to be cared for by others and Almina was fortunate in being sent to the Winslow Farr home. These kind and gracious Saints gave her a good home and loving care. As the time arrived for departure to the west, it was decided that Winslow Farr should marry Almina Randall, as a plural wife (1845), and as such she left Nauvoo with the family.

Not much information is available concerning Almina's life in Utah, but the following report was given in the newspaper at the time of her death: "After her (Mrs. Farr's) arrival in Great Salt Lake City in 1850, she occupied a lone habitation near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon where she was exposed to great danger from maurading Indians. Subsequently, she lived for a time on a farm in Big Cottonwood where her husband died in August, 1866. Previous to his death, however, she moved to Salt Lake City. For over forty [p.197] years she followed the profession of midwife and in that capacity waited upon thousands of her sisters."

Our Pioneer Heritage, Vol. 5, p.197
Another incident which influenced her life was when Mary W. Huff, a widow with five children whom she had known in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, came into the valley. Mary had been a member of the Uriah Curtis company and while crossing the plains they were married. The Huff children became very fond of "Aunt Mina" and sometimes stayed a day or two with her. Following the move south at the coming of Johnston's Army Mary and her family remained in Springville, but her daughter, Lavina Huff, was permitted to return to Salt Lake with Almina Farr. Here Lavina continued her attendance at school and assisted her foster mother with the care of some of her patients. The young girl appreciated the love and care "Aunt Mina" gave to her and Almina was truly grateful for the comfort which Lavina brought to her lonely abode.

On the 13th of October, 1865, Lavina, now twenty years of age, was married to William H. Folsom as third wife. Almina Farr cared tenderly for her foster daughter during the delivery of her first five children who were born in Salt Lake City. Then, in 1877, Lavina and her family bade Almina goodbye for they were moving to Manti where they were to live while Mr. Folsom took charge of the construction of the Manti Temple.

Almina Randall Farr made her home on North West Temple Street in Salt Lake City in the 17th Ward. It was here she passed away on February 26, 1891, at the age of seventy-seven years.—Nina Folsom Moss
