PEPIN THE SHORT STRENGTHENS THE PAPAL POWER
Mann, Horace K.

By Horace K. Mann

That the Pope should write in the person of St. Peter is not in the least extraordinary, when it is considered, on the one hand, that Pepin had always before his mind that the Pope did occupy the place of St. Peter, for he ever spoke of helping "St. Peter" and giving thee xarchate to "St. Peter"; and on the other, that the Pope himself believed, as most Christians have at all times believed, that he was the successor of St. Peter; was, as such, the Rock on which the Church of Christ was founded, and consequently had a supreme right to speak in St. Peter's name. Nor is there, in the domain of fact, the least reason for believing that either Pepin or the Pope regarded this impersonation of St. Peter as anything more than a specially earnestand solemn mode of writing. To such as look at this letter with the eyes neither of Pepin nor the Pope, but with non-Catholic and nineteenth century ideas, not modified by a few grains of commonsense, it may doubtless appear sufficiently awful.

The superscription of the letter is as follows: "Peter, called to apostleship by Jesus Christ , the Son of the living God, ... and through me, the whole Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church of God, ...and Stephen the head of that same Church ... to the most excellent men Pepin, Charles and Carlomann, and to all the clergy and people of the Franks."

The letter of the Pope must have had a prompt effect on Pepin. For,as we are told by the Liber Pontificalis that the siege of Rome lasted three months, and that Astolphus broke it up to resist Pepin in the north, we may conclude that the Frankish monarch forced the passes of the Alps for a second time about the month of April, 756. While Pepin was thus engaged, an embassy reached him from the Emperor at Constantinople. Offering him presents from the Emperor, and promising him more, the imperial secretary implored Pepin to hand over thee xarchate again into his master's hands. In vain. Pepin declared stoutly that he would not on any account alienate it from the power of Blessed Peter and the jurisdiction of the Roman Church and the Apostolic See. Then on his oath he added: "It is not to please man that I have so often engaged in battle. It is only for love of Blessed Peter, and to obtain pardon for my sins. No amount of treasure can move me to take back what I have once offered to Blessed Peter."

Pepin then pushed on to Pavia, and began the siege of it at once. In the autumn Astolphus was again at Pepin's feet. This time he did not escape so easily. He had to pay a war indemnity, become tributary to the Frankish king, acknowledging his dependence by an annual payment, and to fulfil with regard to the Pope what he had promised in the former treaty; and, as a further punishment for his perfidy, he had to surrender to the Pope the city of Comiaclum (Comacchio) in addition.

As what follows is of considerable importance in connection with the temporal power of the Holy See, we will give it almost "verbatim" in the words of the Liber Pontificalis: "He (Astolphus) drew up in writing a donation of all the cities (which he had to surrender) to be kept for ever by Blessed Peter, the Holy Roman Church and the Pontiffs of the Apostolic See, which deed is still preserved in the archives of our Holy Church. To take possession of the said cities, the most Christian king of the Franks sent his counsellor, the venerable abbot and priest, Fulrad, and himself returned to France. In company with envoys from Astolphus, Fulrad went through the Pentapolis and Aemilia, took formal possession of the various cities, and with the keys and hostages from each place, he reached Rome. There, on the confession of St. Peter, he de posited the keys of Ravenna and the other cities of the exarchate, along with Astolphus' donation. And to the same apostle and his vicar, and all his successors to be for ever possessed and ordered by them, he handed over the following cities. ..."

The Pope was thus made undisputed sovereign not only of the "duchy of Rome," over which he had ruled with rapidly increasing power from the Iconoclast disturbances in the times of Gregory II, but also of the"exarchate." The authority, which the voluntary action of its inhabitants, in the first days of the "image-breaking" troubles, had given to the Pope in the exarchate, and which supplies us with the reason why all the deeds and histories of this period speak of the"donations" of Pepin and Astolphus as "restitutions," had now, by the valour and generosity of Pepin, and the "indifference of New Rome, "developed into full sovereignty.

Stephen at once took possession of the exarchate. Sergius, the archbishop of Ravenna, was naturally named the Pope's representative in the exarchate, as the most important and powerful resident in that locality. But the inferior officers, or at least many of them, were sent out from Rome. There cannot, therefore, be any doubt that henceforth the Pope is the real lord of the exarchate.

Indisputably Edmund helped to establish the wonderful Cape Cod town of Sandwich MA in what is now Barnstable County. He migrated from England aboard the Abigail in 1635 where the ship's manifest list him as age 45 and travelling with his wife Elizabeth and children Alice (age 17), Edmund (age 15), Elizabeth (age 12) and John (age 8). The family first went to what is now Lynn where he is recorded in in 1635. He also appeared in Plymouth (where he was made a freeman 2 Jan 1637) and in Duxbury records before finally moving to Sandwich (his grant for the settlement of Sandwich was given by the king and was dated 3 Apr 1637). He was the first English settler on Cape Cod and served as assistant governor to the Colonial Governor (William Bradford) seven consecutive terms beginning in 1640. Other public offices that he was known to have held included membership on the Council of War in 1642 and Deputy to the General Court in 1646. His two sons who survived to manhood both married daughters of Governor Thomas PRENCE (who's wife was Mayflower daughter Patience BREWSTER). The Tolland & Windham book says that he "continued to hold public office and exert a wide influence up to the time of his death" and that he was "buried on his own land on the hill at the rear of his dwelling".

Edmond was generally recognized as disfavoring the church and legislative censure and coercion of the Quakers. He was said to have sympathized with them, and that his views were too liberal for the times. Edmond, after having been a Maglstrate or assistant to the Governor for several years, was permanently dropped at the next election, and some said it was because of his theological tolerance.

It was in the year 1658 that the "Monthly Meeting" of the Quakers was established at Sandwich. Public opinion in this section in favor of the Quakers became so prevelant, and efforts to protect them from the harshness became so frequent that in June 1658 the Plymouth government appointed George Barlow as the state marshal for the locality. He was to coliect the fines and punish the offenders, but his unfairness only increased the resentment. Knowing the feelmg of the Freeman family toward the Quakers, George Barlow had the audacity to ask Edmond for aid in his duties, for which he received an indignant refusal. This prompted Barlow to make a complaint at court for which Edmond was fined ten shillings.

At one court in 1661 the fines amounted to 150 pounds for the attendance at Quaker meetings, and for refusing to take the oath of fidelity. One list of fines imposed upon nineteen Quakers in and a-round Sandwich for this period showed a total of 660 pounds, of which over 89 pounds was paid by Edward Perry. In March 1676 Edward Perry proclaimed that he had received a message from God, saying that the sufferings of New England were caused by general sin and by the persecution of the Quakers, and demanded that this message be published by the governments of Plymouth and Massachusetts.

Edmond's wife Elizabeth died on 14 February 1675-76 and was buried on the hill of the Freeman farm. It is said that Edmond and his sons placed a large stone which in shape resembled a pillion, as a monument for her grave Another, longer stone was placed nearby, which was similar in form to a saddle. These two large stones are known as "the saddle and pillion", and family tradition tells us that they reminded Edmond of the early years in Sandwich when he and Elizabeth traveled by horseback over the fields of their farm. Edmond Freeman died in 1682 and was buried beside Elizabeth and the longer stone, "the saddle", was placed over his grave.

At one time these graves were encircled by a stone fence, remnants of which were still visible in the late 1800's. The beautiful bronze tablets which are presently on these stone monuments were placed there on 22 August 1910 by members of the Freeman family, descendants of Edmond. The photographs of these monuments on page five are by courtesy of Stanley C. Freeman.

Photo Elijah FREEMAN was born on 3 Nov 1757 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, USA. He died on 21 Dec 1828 in Waterford, Caledonia, Vermont, USA.429,584 71 years, husbamd of Olive Freeman.

One of the first pioneers of Waterford CT and a Captan, he came in 1796.
He belonged to the Congregational church. He was sheriff and once attached property of one Tim Richardson in a way, which Richardson said, was crooked. The church called a council of ministers to hear the case and they met at the house of Joseph Hale. Among the witnesses were Joseph Knights and Vine Taylor.

Taylor, who was a curious genious, got old Tim well "beered up" for the hearing and took a seat by the side of him. Capt. Freeman got up and began to tell a pittiful story about the attachment, during which old Tim kept whispering, "He lies." Vine said, "Now is your time to tell him". Tim jumped up and boldly exclaimed, "Capt. Freeman, you lie, and I can prove it by Joseph Knights, Vine Taylor and God Almighty." The witnesses were reliable and the church dismissed him. Freeman lived with his son Aaron until he died not far from 1825.

From the records of Ben W Farr Sr:

“Young Lorin Farr believed in the testimony, every word they said on the first night, and never in his life since has he doubted. While Elder Pratt was preaching his first sermon, stating that the true Church of Christ was again on the earth, with all the gifts and blessings of the gospel, and spoke of the literal gathering of the house of Israel, to rebuild Jerusalem, his mind reverted back to what he had heard his grandfather Freeman say.

“When Lorin was about six years old, and grandfather Freeman came to visit Father and Mother Farr, Lorin would, sitting in his little chair by their side, hear his grandfather often say that the true Church of Christ was not on the earth. Grandfather Freeman was a religious man, having been raised in the Congregational Church, and was a devout man. He had discovered that the Church he belonged to, covered up sin and iniquity, and screened persons from justice. On this account he withdrew from the Church, notwithstanding the urgent importunings of his minister to remain with them. He was very conversant with the scriptures; Lorin heard him talk for hours with his parents, showing to them when the true church should be restored to the earth that there would be in it apostles and prophets, and the believers would enjoy all the gifts and blessings of the gospel, as they did in the days of Christ and His apostles; that the time would come when the children of Israel would be gathered back to their own lands to rebuild Jerusalem, and that we were living in the last days, and that Lorin's father and mother might Live to see the true Church of Christ organized upon the earth. it was about five years from the time that Lorin heard his grandfather talk thus, that he heard Elders Pratt and Johns on preach and tell the same thing which his grandfather said would come to pass. Believing what he had heard his grandfather say, Lorin' s mind was prepared to receive this testimony

of these servants of God; and thus believing, he obeyed at eleven years of age, and was baptized by Lyman E. Johnson in Clyde River, which was near his father's house. He was confirmed by Orson Pratt. He often retired to a bower which he had built in a grove nearby, and there obtained a testimony of the truths of the Latter-day work, which has remained with him to the present day.

Page 176. “Grandfather Freeman passed away about two years before, but his children lived to realize what he said they would, Lorin has often said that his grandfather was to him and his parents, what John the Baptist was to his people. “Why, that is what my grandfather said.” he exclaimed to the elders.” Parents: Prince FREEMAN and Rebackah JOHNSON.

AUTOGRAPHS OF MAJOR JOHN FREEMAN, ASSISTANT AND HIS WIFE MERCY (PRENCE) FREEMAN

BY STANLEY WEBSTER SMITH

THROUGH the courtesy of Mr. Charles E. Valentine, the owner' of the original document, we have been allowed the privilege of reproducing, in the illustration facing this page, a deed of division, dated 18 January, 1681, between Captain Jonathan Sparrow and his eldest son, John Sparrow, both of Eastham, Mass.

This document is of especial interest because the two witnesses were "John Freeman Asist" and "Marsy Freeman Seni", the latter signing by a mark.",

The terms "Asist" and "Senr" prove that these two witnesses were Major John Freeman, of Eastham, who was one of the Governor's Assistants, and his wife Mercy (Prence) Freeman, the only Mercy Freeman who could be called "senior" at that date.

Mercy Freeman was the daughter of Governor Thomas Prence by his first wife, Patience2 Brewster, daughter of Elder William1 Brewster, the Mayflower Passenger.

The will of Richard Sparrow of Eastham, father of Captain : Jonathan Sparrow, and grandfather of John Sparrow, was dated 19 November, 1660, and was probated 5 March, 1660/1. An exhaustive abstract of the will was printed in our twelfth volume, pages 57 and 58.
