Archibald F. Bennett, Saviors on Mount Zion, p.118 [p.119] Still more prolific are results on the Hovey line. The published Hovey Book (A6E33) is well indexed. Since numerous Olive Hoveys are listed in it, it saves time to look for the Freemans. Elijah, Olive and Olive Hovey Freeman are all shown on page 188, where the record comes down to the family of Olive Hovey who married Elijah Freeman, and their children, including Olive Hovey Freeman who married Winslow Farr. With this and a beginning we are able to chart the names of 201 forefathers of Olive Hovey, and printed pedigrees on each line, sometimes many. One line traces back from Olive Hovey Freeman Farr twenty-two generations to an Earl of Winchester in England, who was one of the Barons who forced King John to sign the Great Charter in 1215, and who died a few years later on a Crusade to Jerusalem. The earliest Hovey I have been able to locate thus far is one Richard Hovey, born in 1575 in the County of Essex, England. Records were kept and verified at Waltham Abbey <http://www.walthamabbey.co.uk/homepage.htm>, Holy Cross Church, where many of the Hovey family were baptized, married, and buried. Waltham Abbey is located in the west corner of the county of Essex, between the River Lea and Epping Forest. The historic market town of Waltham Abbey retains a traditional character with its timber-frames buildings and its small bustling market that continues today. It is surrounded by woodlands, forest, and pleasant canal walks. The town dates from the time of Ralph de Tovi, standard-bearer to Canute the Great. The Abbey was originally built and adorned by King Harold [who is reportedly buried there], and consecrated on 3 May 1060. It was an Augustinian Abbey, of which there are still some visible remains within the surrounding gardens. It was one of the last to suffer under the dissolution of monasteries in 1514.

He moved to Hadley as early as 1672 and was a yeoman and a prominent man in the town. He served as representative to the general court in 1699 and 1703 and was a lieutenant in the militia. Jonathan Hyde was born in England in 1626. He was in Cambridge Village (Newton) in 1647, being one of the first settlers. With his elder brother, Samuel, he purchased in 1652, a tract of 240 acres which the two brothers owned in common until 1661. He was a large land owner, and in some of the numerous transfers he is called Sergeant. He in, (I) Mary, dau. of William French of Biflerioa. She d. May 27, 1672, and he m. (2) Jan. 8, 1673-4, Mary Rediat, dau. of John Rediat of Marlboro. Six days (date Jan. 2, 16734) before his second marriage he entered into a marriage contract with Mary Rediat's father and brother. This document is still extant. By its terms he made ample provision for his second wife in ease she should outlive him. By his first wife, Mary French, he had fourteen children, and seven by his second wife, Mary Rediat, so that in all he was the father of twenty-one children. Little wonder is it that one historian remarks that the posterity of these two brothers (Jonathan and Samuel) is as the sand upon the sea shore. He died Oct. 5, 1711, ae. 85 years. His second wife died Sept. 5,1708. His eldest son by his first wife was: Jonathan Hyde, b. in Cambridge, April 1,1651: m. May 6,1613, in Billeriea, Dorothy Kidder. He d. Aug. 2, 1731, Their daughter Elizabeth Hyde b. May 23, 1680; m. Isaac Farwell.

Came to Cambridge Village in 1647, and purchased two hundred and forty acres of land in the village.
