While the history of the Warren family in Europe is not complete in every detail, there are certain facts of interest which seem to be fairly authentic. There is no doubt that the name dates back into the early history of France and England and has been borne by some of their most illustrious sons. Good authority also exists for believing that members of this family have formed alliances through marriage with the ruling houses of both of these countries.

This family name comes doubtless from the Latin word Guarenna or Varenna, of which the primary sense is to stop, hold, or repel, to guard, or keep off. This word in Norman French became Guarenne or Varenne and is sometimes written Guaren or Guarin in old documents. It is likewise found in English as Warren, Warrene, Waren, Warm, Warm, or Waring. The name Varenne was given both to a river in the County of Calais, Normandy and to the country bordering on this stream. This region, while not large in area, apparently was of sufficient political importance in the 11th century to bring to its possessor the title of Earl or Count.

The first to bear this title was William de St. Martins, so-called from his birthplace, who received the fief of Varenne from Duke William II of Normandy. He lived in the 11th century and was without doubt a descendant from the stock of the Danish invaders. There is considerable data extant, though unfortunately much of it is legendary, which would connect him directly with the warrior chieftain of the Northmen, Rolf or Rollo, who forced from King Charles III of France the grant of the northern section of that country, then called Neustria. The new owners changed the name to Normandy and their leader became the first Duke of Normandy. It is from this ducal lineage that the first Earl Warren, or Comte de Guaren or Varrenne, is said to have sprung. History bears eloquent testimony that he was a worthy recipient of this new title, as he served his sovereign nobly both at home and abroad.

The first mention of this name in English history is in connection with the Battle of hastings, fought in 1066. In this conflict one of Duke William s most trusted lieutenants was Comte de Guaren, or the 2d Earl Warren. He must have been in high favor at court, for he later became the husband of Gundred, the daughter of the Comqueror in whose train he had come to England. At Domesday he received 298 manors as his share of the kingdom for the part played in the victories of Hastings and Ely and was rated as the richest subject in England. In 1073, he was appointed one of the Grand Justiciaries of England and was created Earl of Surrey by William Rufus in 1088. Both he and his wife seem to have been of a generous disposition as they gave the money for the establishment, at Lewes in Sussex County, of one of the most magnificent Priories in England, and assisted liberally the other churches and monasteries in the counties subject to them. Their last years were passed in their principal castle at Lewes and they were buried in the Chapter House of the Priory which they had endowed.

The line of nobility thus established existed with distinction until the reign of Edward III when the estates and title were surrendered to the crown by John, 8th Earl Warren, who died without male issue in 1347. The King made grants of the lands thus surrendered but took no notice of the title. In fact it was not until more than a century later that the title was again used, being conferred upon the son of the Duke of Norfolk who was created Earl of Warren and Surrey by Henry VI. As lie left no male issue the title reverted to the crown. It was not conferred again until 1476, when Richard, Duke of York son-in-law of the previous holder, was created by Edward (VI) Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Warren. He also died male issue and the earldom became once more unenjoyed. It has not been granted to anyone since and, therefore, is extinct, though the title Earl of Surrey is a possession of the noble family of Howard.

Through marriage the Warren family was later allied with the houses of Wirmgay and Poynton. From this latter branch came the William Warren who settled in Caunton, Notts Co., England, in the 15th century and was (probably) an ancestor of the Arthur Warren who emigrated to America about 1635. Though this last statement is not established beyond question, yet John C. Warren, Esq., of Nottingham, Eng., who has made a study of this family, writes as follows: "One notable thing is that Arthur was not a common Warren name. Indeed I cannot find it used in old days among any branch of the family except the Leicester and Notts Warrens."

The physiognomy of various descendants of Arthur Warren clearly showed traces of a French ancestry.
IRVING L. FOSTER, A. M.,
Slate College, Pa.

ARTHUR WARREN undoubtedly emigrated from England to New England about 1635, though diligent and repeated efforts have failed to discover the date and place of his birth or the exact time when he came to this country. However, it is known that he settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, before 1638. In that year he married May. At the Quarter Court held in Boston December 7, 1641, he was a witness in the case against Walthian Richards. In the list of the real estate owned by the various proprietors of the plantation of Weymouth, made between Oct. 26, 1642, and May 21, 1644, "the land of Arthure Warren" is described as follows: "Tenn acres of upland and swampe, first given to himselfe, bounded on the East with Mr. Gloveres marsh, on the west and south with Mr. Barnardes land, on the north by the sea." "Tenn acres in the Mill-field, given to himselfe, bounded on the East and south with Hingham line, on the north with the land of of Walter Harms, the comon on the west." In 1645, Arthur "Waring" joined with about 20 members of the church in Braintree in a petition to the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony "for a grant of the Narragansett lands supposed to have been rendered forfeit by the heresy of Gorton, Holden and the others, just proprietors." "At a meeting of the Townsmen the 2d of the 12th mo. 1651-2," it was ordered by them that certain lands be divided, "The names of those that are to have lots in order as followeth: * * *

(No. 5.) Arthure Warren 4 (lots)."

He died after July 6, 1658. Among the probate records of Suffolk County, Mass., kept in Boston, is a document numbered 2,625 and undated, though it must have been made before 1660, as one of the persons who signed it died in that year. It shows by its wording that he left a will but none can be found. This paper reads as follows: "An inventory of the goods and lands of Arthur Warren of Weymouth, late deceased, which he bequeathed to his wife for the maintenance of his children.

A list was made in 1663, of the number of acres in each person's lots. In the first division beginning on Braintree line the widow Warren owned lot number 69, containing 5 acres, and in the second division beginning on this line lot number 32 measuring 15 acres.

In 1664, the selectmen "ordered that Sergent Whitmarsh shall be and is hereby empowered to lay out unto Samuel Pratt a swamp lot which he bath in the right of the heirs of Arthur Warren, deceased." The date of the death of Arthur Warren's widow is unknown.

ASAPH WARREN'S FAMILY BIBLE RECORD (this record shows Elizabeth married to Richard Church)

We here present literal copies of the records in the Family Bible of Asaph Warren7 Thaddeus6, Daniel5, Rebecca Church4, Caleb3, Elizabeth2 Warren, Richard1) of Westborough, Mass., a descendant of Richard Warren of the Mayflower.

Among these records is the birth of Asaph Warren's grandson, Denny G. Warren, whose widow, Mrs. Ada C. Warren, of Westborough, presented the bible to the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants.

The title page of the Old Testament bears the imprint: "Philadelphia: Printed And Published By M. Carey, No.121, Chesnut* Street. 1814." The date on the title page of the New Testament, however, is "1815".

It is interesting to note that although Asaph Warrens, the first owner of this bible, bore the same surname as his Mayflower ancestor, he did not get that name from Richard1 Warren, the Mayflower Passenger.

His Mayflower line was as follows:
1. Richard Warren married Elizabeth-
2. Elizabeth Warren married Richard Church
3. Caleb Church married Joanna Sprague
4. Rebecca Church married Joshua Warren
5. Daniel Warren married Martha Coolidge
6. Thaddeus Warren married Hannah Gould
7. Asaph Warren married Anna Whitney

The Joshua Warren who married Rebecca Church was not a descendant of the Mayflower fainily. He belonged to the Warren family of Watertown, Mass.

The family record pages in Asaph Warren's bible are between the Old Testament and the Apocryphal

JOSEPH WARREN (i. Arthur), born about 1645, in Weymouth, Mass., had a grant of land in 1667, in Medfleld, Mass., and married Experience Wheelock, daughter of Ralph and Rebecca Wheelock, May 21, 1668, There. She was baptized Sept. 3, 1648, in the latter town. (Her father who was born in 1600, in Shropshire and educated at Clare-Hall, Cambridge, Eng., came to Dedham, Mass., in 1637, has been called "the founder of Medfleld" and was a Deputy from that town to the General Court of Massachusetts many years. From him descended the Eleazar Wheelock who was the founder and first president of Dartmouth college.) He was a weaver and in 1673, had a house which, together with his barn, was burned by the Indians in 1676. He was selectman in 1705. His wife died Feb. 27. 1710, in Medfield, and he died there Nov. 18, 1718. Parents: Arthur WARREN and Mary.

2. MARY2 WARREN (Richard') was born in England, and is shown by the record of the division of cattle to have been the eldest daughter, consequently she was born before 1612. *

Her last recorded child was born in 1651, hence Mary was in all probability not born before 1606, and was between twelve and seventeen years of age when she came to Plymouth with her mother and sisters in the Anne, in July, 1623. In the same

vessell came her future husband, Robert Bartlett, whose origin is unknown. In the division of land the following spring he received one acre on the south side of the town, and in the division of cattle in 1627 he was one of Francis Eaton's company, to which fell the tenth lot, a yearling heifer and two she goats. In this division Mary Warren was in her father's company.*

The date of her marriage to Robert Bartlett is unknown. It did not occur until after 22May/1 June, 1627, since Mary Warren is named in the division of cattle on that date. Her oldest son, Benjamin, was admitted a freeman 6/16 June, 1654, which makes it certain that he was born before 6/16 June, 1633, and her daughter Rebecca was married 20/30 Dec., 1649, doubtless being at least sixteen years old at the time, which would show that she was born in 1633 or earlier. Since two children were born before the middle of 1633 it is safe to assume that Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren were married as early as 1629.

The births of but two of their children are now to be found on the records, and we can judge of the order of birth of the first four daughters only by the dates of their marriages. The approximate date of Joseph's birth is obtained from the age given on his gravestone.

ANCESTRAL SUMMARY:

More erroneous information has been published about Richard Warren than any other Mayflower passenger, probably because he has so many descendants (note that all seven of his children grew up and married). It is time here to debunk many of the mistakes that have been published over the past hundred years.

Common mistake #1. Richard Warren's wife is not Elizabeth (Jewett/Jonatt/Juett) Marsh. This is easily disproven. Elizabeth (Jewett) Marsh was born in 1614, which makes her not only younger than Richard Warren's two oldest children, but also makes her only fourteen years old when Richard Warren died. [Mayflower Descendant 2:63].

Common mistake #2. Richard Warren is not a proven descendant of any royalty, whether it be Sir John de Warrene or Charlemagne. Richard Warren's parents have not even been identified, despite extensive searches in the records of England (see the Mayflower Quarterly, 51:109-112 for a summary of one such search).

The only concrete things we know about Richard Warren's ancestry are that he was a merchant of London--whether he was born there or not is an entirely different question. We also know that his wife was named Elizabeth. He had five daughters baptized in England somewhere, and perhaps the true records will some day be brought to light.

There is a Richard Warren who married an Elizabeth Evans on 1 January 1592/3 in St. Leonards, and a Richard Warren who married an Elizabeth Doucke on 1 November 1596 in Sidmouth, Devon. However, since Richard's first child was born about 1610, a marriage in 1592 or 1596 seems most unlikely.

The I.G.I. lists the following baptisms of Richard Warrens from its parish register abstractions (1570-1588):

1 January 1570, St. Columb Minor, Cornwall (son of Lawrence)
25 March 1571, St. Matthew Friday Street, London
20 January 1572, Bishops Nympton, Devon (son of Baldwine)
18 January 1573, Burbage, Leicester (son of John)
2 October 1576, Phillack, Cornwall (son of John)
9 August 1580, Sandy, Bedford (son of William)
24 January 1580, St. Peter Cornhill, London (son of John)
12 June 1580, St. Giles Cripplegate, London (son of John)
1 October 1581, Harrow on the Hill, London
26 January 1583, Haughley, Suffolk (son of George)
11 August 1583, Darford, Kent (son of William)
28 August 1585, Redruth, Cornwall (son of Benet)
12 April 1585, Abbey, St. Albans, Hertford (son of William)
2 March 1586, St. Mary, Stoke Newington, London (son of Robert)
25 December 1587, Shillington, Bedford (son of Robert)
3 September 1587, St. Andrew by the Wardrobe, London

As should be plainly obvious, there were many Richard Warrens in England. If the true Richard Warren is ever identified, it will almost certainly be because the baptisms of his five daughters which should be somewhere in England. There are a few other small clues which may aid researchers looking for records. First, early Charlestown settler Ralph Spague married Joanna Warren, daughter of a Richard Warren from Fordington St. George, Dorset. This Richard Warren died in Fordington, Dorset before 1638. And early Watertown settler John Warren was baptized in Nayland, Suffolk, England in 1585, and he apparently had an uncle named Richard Warren.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:

Richard Warren appears to have been a merchant, who resided in London, and became associated with the Pilgrims and the Mayflower through the Merchant Adventurers. Richard Warren participated in several of the early explorations made by the Pilgrims in 1620, while looking for a place to settle. He appears by land records to have been fairly well-to-do.

When he came over on the Mayflower, he left behind his wife and five daughters, planning to have them sent over after things were more settled in the Colony. His wife and daughters arrived in America in 1623, on the ship Anne.

Nathaniel Morton wrote in his book New England's Memorial, first published in 1669, the following about Richard Warren:

This year [1628] died Mr. Richard Warren, who was an useful instrument and during his life bare a deep share in the difficulties and troubles of the first settlement of the Plantation of New Plymouth.

Richard Warren is an ancestor to many famous Americans. Among them are Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Franklin D. Roosevelt; and Alan B. Shepard, Jr., the first American in space and fifth man to walk on the moon. A published lineage showing Winston Churchill as a descendant of Richard Warren has a questionable generation and is most likely in error. However, Winston Churchill does appear to be a descendant of Mayflower passenger John Howland's brother Arthur.

Richard Warren's English origins and ancestry have been the subject of much speculation, and countless different ancestries have been published for him, without a shred of evidence to support them. Luckily in December 2002, Edward Davies discovered the missing piece of the puzzle. Researchers had long known of the marriage of Richard Warren to Elizabeth Walker on 14 April 1610 at Great Amwell, Hertford. Since we know the Mayflower passenger had a wife named Elizabeth, and a first child born about 1610, this was a promising record. But no children were found for this couple in the parish registers, and no further evidence beyond the names and timing, until the will of Augustine Walker was discovered in December 2002 by Edward Davies. In the will of Augustine Walker, dated April 1613, he mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren", and "her three children Mary, Ann and Sarah." We know that the Mayflower passenger's first three children were named Mary, Ann, and Sarah (in that birth order), and that they were born c1610, c1612, and c1614, so this put the nail in the coffin and we can say with near certainty that Richard Warren of the Mayflower married in Great Amwell, Hertford to Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Augustine Walker. Additional research is currently being sponsored by MayflowerHistory.com to see if anything further can be learned about these families.
