JOHN JOHNSON (William, Garard?) of Canterbury, Kent, England, and a painter, was born about 1528. He married first at Saint George's, Canterbury, on 23 May 1551, Joan Humphrey. She was probably the daughter of John Humphrey of Boughton under Blean who made his will 8 December 1531 and presumably died shortly thereafter. A brief abstract of his will follows:
8 December 1531 the will of JOHN HUMPHREY of Boughton under the Blean, Kent. . . to be buried in the parish churchyard... £6. 13.4 sterling for a priest to say mass for a year . . . to Joan and Agnes my daughters £6. 13.4 sterling each, a brass pot, and a bed complete with mattress, bolster, etc. at age 20 or marriage, each to be the other s heir. If both die before 20 or marriage, the £136.8 to go for gravelling the Street 10 Boughton. . . to my mother 40s, to my brother Richard Humprey 40s... to wife Joan 5 quarters of wheat, 5 quarters of malt . . . to my servant John Gyall 13s.4d., to each of my apprentices 13s.4d Joan my wife to have £10 worth of my movable goods for her choice and £5 in money. Altho no exact ages are given in his will, his two daughters were under 20. These were his only children and his mother was living. All these facts indicate that he was a relatively young man and suggest that the two girls were infants. Thus, Joan was perhaps 2 or 3 which would make her the right age to have been the wife of John Johnson. Also, of the several Humphrey wills of that age and locale, no other one named a daughter Joan.
The year following his marriage, John Johnson was made a freeman of Canterbury, by right of his having been born a citizen of that city. He was a churchwarden of Saint George's in 1582 and 1583. Parents: William JOHNSON and Alice FORFLOD.

" Here lyes y body of Lieutenant Matthew Johnson, aged 62 years died luly 19, 1696." Lieut. Matthew Johnson, son of Capt. Edward Johnson, the author of "The Wonder-working Providence of Sion's Saviour in New England," and foremost among the founders of Woburn, was born in England, and came from Charlestown to Woburn to reside, where he was taxed in 1666, and had a share of common lands assigned him in 1668. Was a carpenter by trade. Represented Woburn in the General Court, 1686-89, 1690, 1691, and 1692. Repeatedly one of the selectmen, etc., and much esteemed. WILLIAM JOHNSON (Capt. Edward1). baptized Mar. 22, 1628-9, in Canterbury, England, married, May 16, 1655, Esther, or Hester, daughter of Elder Thomas Wiswall of Dorchester and Newton. She died Dec. 27, 1707. He attained to high civic office. was one of the magistrates or assistants of the Colony, and a military officer of the several ranks from ensign to major. He resisted, at the risk of imprisonment, the spirit of royal aggression in the days of Andros. He commanded, until superseded by an officer deputed by the government, a detachment of about 300 men, assembled in arms at Billerica on the night of Aug. 23. 1695, because of the killing or capture of fifteen persons by the Indians at that place. A. thorough search of the country to the northward by this detachment, with William Johnson as second in command, failed to discover the enemy anywhere in force, and the men who had assembled from Woburn and its neighboring towns were dismissed. He was the second recorder or clerk of the town, amid held many town offices. His career may be carefully traced in the records.* He died May 22. 1704, in Woburn. His will, dated Mar 10, 1695, probated Sept. 11, 1704, names wife Esther ; sons, William, Edward, Ebenezer, Benjamin, Josiah, and Joseph; daughters. Esther Wyman, and Susanua and Abigail Johnson; his son William's wife, and her father Gardner; grandchildren, William. eldest son of his son William Benjamin and Noah, sons of his son William: Edward, son of his son Edward; the twins of his son Ebenezer: his daughter Esther Wyman's four daughters and her son Seth Wyman; Esther, Mary, and Hannah, daughters of his son William; his son Ebenezer's two daughters; his son Edward's three daughters, and his son Edward's second son.

WILLIAM JOHNSON of Canterbury, Kent, England, and a painter, was probably the son of Garard Johnson who made his will in 1506. This Garard was perhaps the son of Gerard Johnson whose estate was administered in 1502/3 by his widow Katherine.

4 March 1522 the will of ROBERT JOHNSON of the parish of Holy Cross of Westgate in Canterbury . . . to be buried in the churchyard next to my father and mother . . . to my sister Joan 20s. ... many bequests to various people, apparently none of them near relatives. Proved 16 May 1522.
William Johnson was born about 1500. He married first, about 1528, Alice Foreflode, daughter of John Foreflode, a hatter and a freeman of Canterbury. By this marriage William Johnson became a freeman of Canterbury in 1528. She died and he remarried to Ellzabeth who was buried at Saint George s 17 May 1575. Her burial is recorded twice. In one entry the record says, Elizabeth, wife of William Johnson", but in the second entry the words "Grandfather to William Johnson parrish clarke", have been added. William Johnson the parrish clerk and grandson probably added these words about 1598 when the register was copied. William Johnson was buried at Saint George's, Canterbury, 9 June 1575.

WILLIAM JOHNSON (John, William) of Canterbury, Kent, was baptized there at Saint George's church in 1559 (month and day not recorded). He was made a freeman by birth right in 1583. On 8 May 1587 at Holy Cross church in Canterbury, he married Susan Porredge, daughter of John Porredge of Westgate Court, Canterbury. She was baptized 20 January 1565/6 at Saint Dunstan's church in Canterbury.
Apparently his son Edward conveyed to him for life the house in the parish of Saint Alphege "over against the Bishop's Palace," which, as George Johnson, son of Edward, states, "was left me by my father, Edward Johnson."
William Johnson was a joiner, that is to say, a carpenter. His wife Susan died and was buried in the church yard of Saint Dunstan's on 10 April 1604. He married secondly, on 24 (sic) August 1617 at Saint George s church, by license dated 25 August 1617, Ann Cobb, widow. She was buried at Saint George's 27 September 1637. William Johnson died two months later and was buried 27 December 1637, also at Saint George's.
At one time he was parish clerk of Saint George's church. Apparently he left no will, but his estate was eventually put into the hands of a creditor as follows:

Edward's heir Athelstan (reigned 925-39) was also a distinguished and audacious soldier who pushed the boundaries of the kingdom to their furthest extent yet. In 927-8, Athelstan took York from the Danes; he forced the submission of king Constantine of Scotland and of the northern kings; all five Welsh kings agreed to pay a huge annual tribute (reportedly including 25,000 oxen), and Athelstan eliminated opposition in Cornwall. The battle of Brunanburh in 937, in which Athelstan led a force drawn from Britain and defeated an invasion by the king of Scotland in alliance with the Welsh and Danes from Dublin, earned him recognition by lesser kings in Britain.
Athelstan's law codes strengthened royal control over his large kingdom; currency was regulated to control silver's weight and to penalise fraudsters. Buying and selling was mostly confined to the burhs, encouraging town life; areas of settlement in the midlands and Danish towns were consolidated into shires. Overseas, Athelstan built alliances by marrying four of his half-sisters to various rulers in western Europe. He also had extensive cultural and religious contacts; as an enthusiastic and discriminating collector of works of art and religious relics, he gave away much of his collection to his followers and to churches and bishops in order to retain their support. Athelstan died at the height of his power and was buried at Malmesbury; a church charter of 934 described him as 'King of the English, elevated by the right hand of the Almighty ... to the Throne of the whole Kingdom of Britain'.
